Jadeveon Clowney Announcement: Examining the Impact He'd Have on Each School

Donald WoodFeb 14, 2011

Jadeveon Clowney passed on announcing where he would attend college on National Signing Day because he wanted to make his announcement on his birthday.

Clowney was the USA Today high school Defensive Player of the Year and one of the most highly touted prospects in years.

Today, he will make his decision on what school he will attend.

The options have been cut down to Alabama, Clemson and South Carolina, but the odds-on favorite is the University of South Carolina.

Clowney is an amazing athlete with a ton of growing to do. With his size, strength and speed, he could become a star in college football and beyond. He is explosive off the ball and has a ton of ability to improve.

Each school is looking for him to supply their team with a big spark and consistent play, but he would bring certain intangibles to certain schools.

South Carolina Gamecocks

The Gamecocks are the front runners to land the top prospect and they could use the help.

Clowney would step right in as a starter if he comes ready to work and would make an instant impact.

The main thing I saw about Clowney’s play that South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier can help was his attack level.

Jadeveon Clowney attacks high and it gets him out of position to make tackles sometime. Spurrier will get him low and help him use his long arms to disturb lanes and wrap people up.

Clemson Tigers

The Clemson Tigers were the biggest surprise for me on National Signing Day.

They signed some of the biggest names out there and they did it without having a ton of success recently.

A team like Auburn was expected to make a huge jump after their national success, but Clemson was a surprise.

Another surprise would be if Jadeveon Clowney signs to play at Clemson. While Clemson is in his home state, he seems to be leaning elsewhere.

What Clowney really brings to Clemson is a possible replacement for Da'Quan Bowers. Bowers was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and led the nation in sack yardage and tackles for loss yardage.

Those are big shoes to fill, but if any athlete has a chance to make up that missed production, it would be Clowney.

Alabama Crimson Tide

I feel like the Crimson Tide have the least chance of landing Clowney simply on the principal that he wants to stay close to home.

Another reason is that Alabama is stocked with blue chip defensive end prospects like Xzavier Griffin, Jeoffrey Pagan and D.J. Pettway.

Clowney would have to wait to play while it’s almost a foregone conclusion that he would start at both Clemson and South Carolina.
