Strikeforce Antonio Silva Stops Fedor: Fedor Emelianenko Says He May Retire

Nick CaronFeb 12, 2011

The MMA world was shocked once again Saturday night when Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva completely dominated and stopped former No. 1 ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko in the main event of the Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva event, prompting Fedor to question retirement following the fight.

After being hammered by Silva on the ground, Fedor's right eye was closed and he could not continue the fight, the referee stopped the fight, awarding Bigfoot Silva the win.

Fedor lost his previous fight as well to Fabricio Werdum and has not looked like the old, dominant Fedor that we all grew to know and love in recent years.

Silva dominated the contest from the beginning, and while both men landed shots back and forth, it was Silva who landed the majority of the big shots in the first round.

When the second round began, Fedor went for a big overhand right, but Silva took the opportunity to take the Russian to the ground where he proceeded to hammer him with big shots, eventually reaching the mount position where he delivered an amazing flurry of punches.

Things looked dangerous for Fedor as his face turned red from the punches. He gave up his back where Silva attempted a rear-naked choke, prompting Fedor to flip back over. Silva eventually went for an arm triangle but was not able to finish.

Things looked dangerous again later in the round when Silva nearly knee-barred the former Pride champion. Fedor faintly went for a submission of his own, but Silva confidently shook his finger "no" as the second round came to an end.

Between rounds, the fight was ended when it was determined that Fedor could not see out of his right eye.

After the fight, Fedor hinted that this may be his last fight. When asked more directly if this was his last fight, Fedor again responded that, "Maybe it is time."

The crowd, shocked and saddened at the same time, looked on in astonishment as this may have been the final time we would see "The Last Emperor" in mixed martial arts.

The end of an era? Perhaps.
