Hamill In For Silva, Could Rashad Evans Fight Phil Davis?

Andrew MahlmannFeb 12, 2011

There have been some major shakeups in the UFC light-heavyweight divisions matchups over the past week.

First, Jon Jones was announced as the next challenger for champion Mauricio Rua.  Jones' teammate, Rashad Evans, had to withdraw due to a knee injury.

It is not a major injury, but the former champion would not have been ready in time for the March 19th date with Rua.

Also this week, controversy over one of Thiago Silva's drug tests resulted in the fighter being pulled from his match up with Quinton Jackson in May.

It was announced today that he is being replaced by Matt Hamill.  An appropriate move considering he was promised a top ten fighter by Dana White after beating Tito Ortiz in his last outing.

That leaves Rashad Evans and Phil Davis currently without opponents.  I wonder if that is a match up that fans want to see.

Rashad Evans is ranked in the top three and is a former champion with excellent wrestling.  Phil Davis is an uber elite wrestler who is a fast rising MMA star since starting in 2008.

With the recent meteoric ascension of Jones, Phil Davis would have the chance to do the same for himself by taking on Rashad Evans.

It would be a perfect test for Phil Davis, as he has yet to face anybody that comes close to his level of wrestling.

Should Phil Davis win, it would also provide immediate interest in a match with Rashad Evans' teammate; no one other than Jon Jones.

Logistics might be an issue in regards to Rashad Evans' timetable for recovery if Davis keeps his spot on the UFC 129 card April 20th.

Regardless, this is an exciting prospect for a match up, and possibly one we should be looking out for.
