UFC: Freddie Roach Compares GSP vs. Silva to Pacquiao vs. Mayweather

Sal DeRoseFeb 11, 2011

Georges St-Pierre versus Anderson Silva certainly has earned the right to be considered the Manny Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather of MMA.

In a fight between GSP and Anderson Silva, you have two of the most dominant fighters in UFC history. Anderson Silva holds the record for most consecutive wins in the UFC, winning all 12 of his fights in the Octagon. GSP, on the other hand, owns a record of 15-2 with losses toe Matt Hughes and Matt Serra, both of which he avenged.

Now, respected boxing coach Freddie Roach has gone out to say what he thinks the magnitude of a GSP versus Anderson Silva is.

"It's Pacquiao-Mayweather in MMA," Roach said to UFC broadcaster, Joe Rogan on this week's edition of UFC Ultimate Insider. "It's one guy going up in weight to fight the bigger and better—supposedly better—guy."

Roach has trained Pacquiao and watched the mega-fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather fall between the cracks. It seems that fight will never happen in boxing, despite the large success the fight would garner.

The UFC should take away one lesson from this missed opportunity by boxing. When you have a big mega-fight between two of the sports top fighters, make it happen.

Both Silva and GSP are considered the top two fighters in the world. The winner would walk away with his legacy cemented and possibly a title belt, the other would walk away a loser of the biggest fight in MMA history.

A GSP versus Silva fight has all the makings of a legendary fight, with GSP having to move up a weight class to go after the bigger Silva, who has dominated his weight class since his first days in the Octagon.

Roach expects the obvious from a fight between GSP and Silva, that both would be at their best.

"But for that fight, I expect both guys to be at their best. Georges is stronger physically and can rough him up on the inside. Anderson's more of a technician and knows distance. Distance is the key to that fight," said Roach.

At first glance, it doesn't seem like GSP would be able to beat Silva. But GSP is a different breed of fighter. They both are.

You can't count either one out of that fight. It would be a fight for the ages. The pay-per-view numbers would be insane, and if the fight were to be in Canada (or anywhere for that matter), it would sell out instantly. A fight between the two would shatter records.

UFC President Dana White and matchmaker Joe Silva need to make this happen.

Learn a lesson from boxing guys, when you have a fight of this magnitude, make it happen.
