Brock Lesnar's Horrible Striking: 10 Camps He Should Work With
Brock Lesnar is a tremendous athlete. He is fast, strong and agile. His wrestling, Jiu Jitsu and ground-and-pound have all looked excellent in his past bouts.
But his striking sucks.
He looks scared and timid while standing. At the first sign of adversity, he turtles up and runs away like he is being attacked by bees. Striking like that will not get him his belt back.
So where should Lesnar go to improve his stand-up abilities? Which camps would help him out the most? Click through to find out.
10. DeathClutch Gym
1 of 10
Name
Deathclutch Gym
Location
Alexandria, Minnesota
Notable Strikers
None
Why
Brock Lesnar should be able to import world class strikers to help him at his own gym. He shouldn't have to travel outside of Deathclutch to get the proper training. He is comfortable here and will learn the most.
Why Not
It obviously isn't working there. The Lesnar camp has brought in Randy Couture and Pat Barry to help train him, and neither seemed to help that much. Lesnar needs a change.
9. Alliance MMA
2 of 10
Name
Alliance MMA
Location
Chula Vista, California
Notable Strikers
Brandon Vera, Travis Browe and Dominick Cruz
Why
Brandon Vera has excellent muay thai skills and would surely help out Lesnar. Cruz, the bantamweight title holder, has some of the best striking in his division. Alliance is also home to notables Joey Beltran and Phil Davis.
Why Not
No one at the gym is truly an elite mixed martial artist. Cruz arguably is, but a 135-pounder is going to do little to help the 265-pound Lesnar. He needs to be surrounded by elite heavyweights.
8. Power MMA and Fitness
3 of 10
Name
Power MMA and Fitness
Location
Gilbert, Arizona
Notable Strikers
Robbie Lawler, Ryan Bader
Why
Lesnar is a wrestler at heart, so it would make sense that he trains with a good group of wrestlers. Power MMA is home to Bader, Aaron Simpson and C.B. Dollaway.
Why Not
Their striking is just not that good. Both Lawler and Bader have dynamite in their hands but neither one has elite technique.
7. Team Nogueira
4 of 10
Name
Team Nogueira
Location
San Diego, California
Notable Strikers
Anderson Silva, The Nogueira Brothers, Jose Aldo, Junior Dos Santos
Why
It's hard to find a better group of strikers than Team Nogueira. They house some top heavyweights, who also just happen to have some of the best striking in the 265-pound division.
Why Not
Can you honestly see Lesnar training with the Nogueira brothers or Anderson Silva? Yeah, me either. Besides, Junior Dos Santos, his opposing coach on this season of The Ultimate Fighter, trains at Team Nogueira.
6. Team Fedor
5 of 10Name
Fedor Emelianenko
Location
Somewhere in Russia
Notable Strikers
Fedor
Why
Who better to train striking with than arguably the best heavyweight striker in the history of MMA? Emelianenko and Lesnar are surprisingly similar, as both are quiet figures who prefer to stay out of the media spotlight.
Why Not
If Lesnar wouldn't go train in California with the Nogueira brothers, why would he go to Russia?
5. Golden Glory
6 of 10Name
Golden Glory
Location
Breda, Netherlands
Notable Strikers
Alistair Overeem, Semmy Schilt, Sergei Kharitinov, Gokhan Saki
Why
While not the best MMA camp, Golden Glory is home to the top group of strikers in the world. Former K-1 World Gran Prix winners Alistair Overeem and Semmy Schilt are huge fighters who would whip Lesnar into shape quickly.
Why Not
Besides the whole traveling issue revealing its ugly head yet again, Golden Glory may be a little too intense for Lesnar. Going from training striking with Jon Madsen and Cole Konrad to Alistair Overeem and Semmy Schilt is a tremendous leap.
4. American Top Team
7 of 10
Name
American Top Team
Location
Coconut Creek, Florida
Notable Strikers
Thiago Alves, Thiago Silva, Antonio Silva, Hector Lombard
Why
American Top Team has established itself as one of the premier training camps in all of mixed martial arts. It posts excellent strikers, including Alves and Silva, as well as top-notch coaches.
Why Not
While American Top Team has enjoyed great success over the past few years, they currently do not hold a title in the UFC and do not have a fighter within striking distance of a title shot. If Lesnar is looking to become a top five heavyweight, he should head there. If he wants to win a title, he should not.
3. American Kickboxing Academy
8 of 10
Name: American Kickboxing Academy
Location: San Jose, California
Notable Strikers: Cain Velasquez, Cung Le, Mike Swick
Why: Why would you not want to go train with a camp that has produced the number one heavyweight in the world, the number two welterweight in the world and the highest ranked heavyweight prospect? AKA has some of the best trainers in the world, as evident by the success the guys from the gym have had in their careers.
Why Not: Lesnar is entirely too stubborn to go train with the guy that beat him. Besides if Velasquez and Lesnar trained together, they would probably refuse to fight, robbing the MMA world of a legitimate rematch if Lesnar were to ever improve his striking.
2. Roufusport
9 of 10
Name
Roufusport
Location
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Notable Strikers
Pat Barry, Anthony Pettis, Stephan Bonnar, Alan Belcher, Matt Mitrione
Why
Going to Roufusport would put Lesnar under the tutelage of former kickboxer Duke Roufus. Everyone coming out of the Wisconsin-based camp has good striking in the world of mixed martial arts. Heavyweights Pat Barry and Matt Mitrione would both be very helpful preparing Lesnar for the other heavyweights in the UFC.
Why Not
While Matt Mitrione continues to develop nicely, Roufusport has yet to have a serious title contender in the UFC. Pettis has been granted a title shot coming from the WEC, but he did not earn it by beating guys in the UFC. It would be nice to see someone like Mitrione or Belcher reach the top five of their division before Roufusport becomes affiliated with the top camps in the country.
1. Greg Jackson's Submission Fighting
10 of 10
Name
Greg Jackson's Submission Fighting and Grudge Training Center
Location
Albuquerque, New Mexico and Wheat Ridge, Colorado
Notable Strikers
Shane Carwin, Brendan Schaub, Nate Marquardt, Andrei Arlovski
Why
The two camps are practically synonymous with each other under the guidance of Greg Jackson and Trevor Wittman. The two are arguably the most well renowned in the world of mixed martial arts, producing some of the top fighters in the entire world. Large strikers such as Carwin, Schaub and Arlovski would give Lesnar an excellent entry into stand-up fighting.
Why Not
If Lesnar goes and trains with Carwin and Schaub, who is left for him to fight? That eliminates two potential bouts. Besides that, Greg Jackson's camp is clearly the premier mixed martial arts training camp. He would make sure that Lesnar learned how to strike, fast tracking him on his way back to the title.
