MLB Rumors: Boston Red Sox Interested in former New York Yankee Alfredo Aceves

Bronx Baseball DailyFeb 6, 2011

Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe who writes, "The Red Sox are looking into Aceves, who was shut down by the Yankees May 8 after hurting his back. Aceves is 14-1 in his career, including 10-1 in 2009 with the Yankees. He was 3-0 last season until his back injury flared up. He would be an injury rehab project, but is working out and could provide protection in the bullpen or as a starter."

Alfredo Aceves, 28, missed almost the entire 2010 season with a back injury, and then needed surgery this offseason after he broke his clavicle that he injured in a bike accident.

That surgery took place in December and was expected to be at least three months recovery time. That would cause him to at least miss the start of spring training, and due to the nature of his back injuries, Aceves is a legitimate injury risk in 2011. So the Yankees designated him for assignment.

Still, it was probably a mistake to DFA Aceves considering his versatility and the state of the Yankees' pitching staff. They haven’t made much of an effort to re-sign him since releasing him, but they supposedly have had interest.

Now that the Boston Red Sox are reportedly interested in him, they should amp up their efforts to bring him back into the fold. Even if he doesn’t return until June, he could be a decent option for the starting rotation, and if there isn’t a need there, the bullpen.

It would be a tragedy to see Aceves helping the Red Sox in 2011 or 2012 for that matter, if the Yankees could have easily retained him.
