NHL All-Star Draft: 10 Picks the Captains Would Like To Re-Do
With the new Fantasy Draft in place for the 2011 NHL All-Star game, the selection process was much anticipated.
Plenty of outlets produced mock drafts to show where people should and could go during the selections.
It was the first time this has ever happened, so mistakes were bound to be made.
This slideshow is of the 10 mistakes that Nicklas Lidstrom and Eric Staal could have avoided.
Enjoy!
10. Phil Kessel
1 of 10
Poor Phil Kessel, first he goes last in the fantasy draft, then he has no points in the All-Star game and now he is last on my list.
Sorry, Phil.
I think that if one of the teams decided to select him before anyone, he may have played better during the All-Star weekend.
It’s just a theory.
9. Henrik Lundqvist
2 of 10
Henrik Lundqvist isn’t having his best year this season and can be easily beat.
Staal selected Lundqvist too early in the sixth round, and it was just to make his brother sweat.
The humor of the gesture was great, but he missed out on good offensive players in a game with no defense.
8. Marc Staal
3 of 10
It would have been better if the teams had split up the Staals like they did the Sedins.
Marc Staal was taken in the seventh round before better defensemen, but you know politics played a big part in this decision.
Pressure from a mother is a heavy burden.
7. Anze Kopitar
4 of 10
Anze Kopitar was selected in the 15th round, and it was way too late.
Kopitar is having a great season. and with hindsight being 20-20, Kopitar played excellent.
It would have been smarter for one of the teams to select Kopitar before any of their goalies or defenders.
6. Jeff Skinner
5 of 10
Don’t get me wrong, I know the kid had the back of the fans, but he went too high in the draft and to the wrong team.
Team Lidstrom should have made the choice to take Jeff Skinner and force the fans to love both squads.
Skinner would’ve loved to be a thorn in his captain's side and score on his veteran netminder.
5. Claude Giroux
6 of 10
Claude Giroux is one of the most talented forwards in the NHL, and he should have been selected higher.
Round 13 is a joke for a player of his caliber, and he could have been selected over Kris Letang or any of the goaltenders that went so early.
Jeff Skinner went before Giroux. C’mon.
4. Loui Eriksson
7 of 10
Loui Eriksson was the biggest surprise of the weekend for me.
Looking back now, he should’ve been one of the top forwards taken.
Not only did he have a beautiful shootout goal in the skills competition, but he also added four points during the game and looked amazing throughout the weekend.
3. Duncan Keith
8 of 10
Duncan Keith is a great defender, but Team Lidstrom picked him too high.
I think there was some influence from assistant captain Patrick Kane to make the selection, but Lidstrom has the final word.
In a game like this, there is no defense being played, so selecting a defensive defender in the second round is silly.
Maybe it’s because he is the defending Norris Trophy winner, but there were better offensive players out there.
2. Cam Ward
9 of 10
One way to get a crowd on your side is to select the hometown boy.
One way to lose an All-Star game is by selecting a goalie first overall.
I didn’t see Bernie Parent on the ballot, so there was no goalie deserving of the first overall selection.
I understand it was Carolina, but he could’ve waited two rounds and got him.
1. Jonathan Toews
10 of 10
I would like to note that Toews came off like a baby the whole weekend.
Jonathan Toews should have been taken higher in the draft, but watching him sit there looking angry made me enjoy his wait.
Toews is a great player, and he should have been selected a lot higher than the eighth round selection he was given.
