Why RB DeAngelo Williams Is a Perfect Fit In New England

Tony SantorsaJan 27, 2011

Running back DeAngelo Williams is one of the most underrated players in the NFL. He is over-shadowed by running backs like Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, and Michael Turner, but he has just as much talent as all of them.

If not more.

Williams is one of the few dual-threat running backs in the NFL, and he is now a free agent.

After an injury-plagued 2010 season, his stock might have fallen, but he certainly won't disappoint.

When you think of teams that don't always have a great running game, New England comes to mind.

The Patriots have the best quarterback in the NFL, Tom Brady, and adding Williams would just put New England's already high-powered offense over the top.

You can hand the ball off to Williams 20 times a game, but you don't have to when you have a quarterback like Tom Brady. But, unlike many running backs, Williams is a great receiver.

In Williams five-year career, he has average around 30 receptions each season, and really racks up the yards-after-catch with a career average of 8.4.

New England already has Danny Woodhead, who is a great receiver, but adding Williams to the roster would keep both players fresh. The Patriots could still leave Woodhead as the third-down back, allowing New England to utilize Williams in the first two downs.

Having Williams on the field will allow you to show a run formation, but then throw a quick screen because he's so dangerous in open space.

The ideal set would have Brady in the shotgun with Williams in the backfield and Wes Welker, Deion Branch and Aaron Hernandez as the wide receivers with Rob Gronkowski as the tight end. Just in that formation alone, you can hurt a defense in so many ways at multiple points of attack.

Williams has a great yards-per-carry average over his career with 5.0.

Playing on a below average Carolina Panthers team his whole career, he was the team's primary option. So, having a 5.0 yards-per-carry average over his career is pretty impressive, when most defenses key on him.

Williams has rushed for over 1,000 yards twice in his career and averages 65.8 yards-per-game.

You can compare Williams to Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, who had a break-out year this season. Charles had a ridiculous yards-per-carry average, and Williams is as good, if not better, than Charles.

By adding Williams to New England's roster, they would have the luxury of letting BenJarvus Green-Ellis walk, just in-case if he's a one-year-wonder, and not use their ridiculous amount of draft picks on any running backs.

As Brady's career is coming to an end, with a possible five years left, you're going to need to give him as much rest as possible. By adding Williams, who's only 27 can take a lot of the load off of Brady.
