Pittsburgh Steelers: Going Into Hallowed Ground, Can Steelers Survive Dallas?

Freddy BlairJan 27, 2011

With Super Bowl XLV just a little more than a week away, it has to be sinking in to the Pittsburgh Steelers:

"What were they thinking?"

Imagine the scenario:

The Steeler's offense has the ball, first down at their own twenty-eight yard line mid way through the second quarter. Suddenly it dawns on them where they are--in the middle of Cowboys Stadium.

Ben Rothlesburger looks up, and sees nothing but Blue and Silver, and the sudden realization of where he is sends a chill through his bones. He knows the story, and the history of the Cowboys and his Steelers.

But it's not the Cowboys on the other side of the line of scrimmage, it's the Green Bay Packers.

So, why are they in Dallas?

Suddenly he can't focus on the plays, and in the gut of every Steelers' player and fan there is a gnawing sensation that tells them they are out of their element.

They are in Cowboys country, and they are throwing a party in the backyard of their bitter rivals for over 35 years.

Poor Mike Tomlin looks around, and with an eerie feeling begins to wonder what he got himself into—and how he'll get his Steelers out of Dallas.

Suddenly, and ominously, Randy White and Harvey Martin appear just over his left shoulder in the front row of the stands.

And then, the realization that they are very much like a herd of wildebeests, who rambled in search for food, and find themselves grazing in the feeding grounds of lions begins to set in.

The Cowboys and the Steelers fought heated battles in other cities that have since become legend, but now the Steelers have shown up in the Cowboys back yard with nobody home.

And suddenly, they realize how wrong all of this is.

Can you imagine how the city of Pittsburgh would warm to the idea of the Dallas Cowboys using their field to win a championship?

Cowboys Stadium in Arlington Texas may be a sight where the Steelers find themselves many times over the next generation in the NFL, but showing up to play a championship game in the Cowboys back yard with nobody home has to be unnerving at some point.

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven't even been to Dallas since Cowboys stadium opened to play a game.

There is no more hated rival of the Dallas Cowboys and their fans alike than the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The thought of 40,000 "Terrible Towels" waving on one side, and 40,000 blocks of cheese sitting on the other might even be humorous.

But for Steelers fans, what will happen if they cheer too loudly and wake up Cowboys fans sleeping nearby.

This article is all in good fun, but one question has to be asked:

Should the Steelers win, who are their fans going to stop and brag to as they leave the stadium—and begin to roll back through the streets of Dallas, Texas to celebrate?

Food for thought.

That's the bottom line.
