Jay Cutler: Does He Deserve Our Hatred or Our Sympathy?

Eric BowmanJun 2, 2018

Sunday afternoon, it appeared as though everyone had something to say about Cutler.

Nobody really knew when Cutler got hurt, they just saw him standing on the sidelines. Twitter blew up in regards to Cutler. Several NFL players had many a things to say about what happened during the game.

Everyone is entitled to free speech. Everyone bashing Cutler was sitting at home and they let their mind speak. People were angry and distraught and some were happy—Packers fans would much rather face Caleb Hanie than Cutler.

But should we hate on Cutler? Does he deserve our sympathy?

The odds are the hate and the evens are the reasons to give him our sympathy.

1. He Just Stood There

The reports say he sprained his MCL. So yes, he was, in fact, hurt. However, Jay Cutler just stood there.

Nobody knew how hurt he really was. The report on the sideline was that he was questionable. Thus leaving everyone to perceive he could play.

But Cutler just stood on the sideline and watched his team fight. The Bears fought as hard as they could till the very end. They had a chance to win the game. And Cutler just watched.

Get an ice pack! Get some crutches! Get something to indicate that you're in pain. All eyes were on you, Jay Cutler, and you just stood there.

2. He Really Was Hurt

Jay Cutler sprained his MCL. The team doctors told him he shouldn't go back to play. So he listened. Wouldn't you?

After all, they are doctors. And typically when you're in pain and the doctor says not to do this, you listen.

3. The Most Important Game of His Career

One win away from the Super Bowl. The Bears were down two scores at the half. By no means was the game over. The Super Bowl was well within reach.

Undoubtedly the most important game Jay Cutler has ever played in his life, and he couldn't finish it out. Everyone is now questioning your toughness, Jay.

He played one series, threw a couple incomplete passes and called it a day. Never came back in the game to have another crack at it.

4. He Got Too Much Hate

Everyone was hating on Jay Cutler Sunday afternoon. Celebrities, athletes, even grandmas (my friend's mother had a few choice words about Cutler's lack of play).

It was all anyone could talk about on Sunday. And when the news broke on Monday that he actually was hurt, many of those haters felt bad.

So you gotta feel a little sorry for the guy who just couldn't go.

5. He Let The Third String Quarterback Play

A week ago, nobody knew who Caleb Hanie was. Today, some people are questioning if he could actually compete for the starting role in Chicago.

If you're Jay Cutler, how do you let Lovie Smith put in the backup's backup? At that moment, how does the adrenaline in you not kick in and say, "Coach, put me in! Give me another shot!"

Any coach in that situation is going to go with the starter. Who knows, maybe a little rest could've helped. Well, we'll never know cause Jay Cutler let Hanie into the game.

And Hanie almost won it for them.

6. Who Are We To Judge?

Do you play football in the NFL? Well, on the rare occasion that you do, then you can judge. But for the rest of us, we have no idea what it's like to get hit by a 300-pound massive lineman.

We're all sitting at home on our couch or out at the bar just watching the game. We see a guy who we think should play not playing. And we are quick to speculate. And throw a lot of hate his way.

Unless you have a gavel, should you really be judging someone?

7. Bears Fans Hate Too

They burned his jersey after the game. Cutler's fanbase isn't all that huge.

And those who spent the money on his jersey were so upset they torched it.

8. Cutler Plays Hard

Jay Cutler was sacked 52 times this season and five times in the playoffs. It was the only quarterback category that he was No. 1 in. He was sacked 12 more times than second place.

He knows what its like to get hit. His line did not do a very good job protecting him this year. Yet he gets up play after play knowing he has to keep going.

And at a time when he knew he couldn't go and doctors told him not to go, everyone says that he must.

9. Taking The Steps?

Have you ever taken the steps on a hurt leg? There's no point to it at all because of the pain it brings you. Most of the time you just end up using one leg anyways so to not put any pressure on the hurt one.

Unless you absolutely have to, find another to the next floor. Like, say, the elevator.

Well yesterday, Jay Cutler went to dinner with his girlfriend Kristin Cavallari and CHOSE to take the stairs. Dude, you're hurt, take the elevator.

Oh, what, now you want to prove your toughness? Yes I know there is a difference between taking the stairs and playing football.

But Cutler, you have to know that every little move you make in the coming weeks in going to be scrutinized. Don't bring negative attention to yourself like this.

10. His Teammates Defend Him

Caleb Hanie said he's not a quitter. Olin Kreutz and Brian Urlacher used expletives to get their points across. The Chicago Bears defended their quarterback.

And maybe you should to. If he's not your quarterback, then you have reason not to care. But it doesn't give you the right to bring him down.
