NFL Rankings: 10 Quarterbacks Who Wouldn't Win 'Punt, Pass and Kick' in 2010
After watching Matt Ryan throw the sweetest interception into the waiting hands of Tramon Williams to end the half of the Packers-Falcons game, I settled in my seat for a relaxing halftime.
While waiting for the inevitable destruction that the Packers were about to partake in to continue, I watched the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick finals take place. I was thoroughly impressed by all who participated, and truly believe that some of the boy competitors (and one or two girl competitors) would be a better starting quarterback in the NFL than these 10 current quarterbacks.
10. Mark Sanchez
1 of 10
This is probably way too high to put a quarterback who has a chance to play in the Super Bowl, but Mark Sanchez is terrible.
I've watched him play too many times and I am quite sure (although I can't prove it) that the only reason he is in the NFL is because of his looks. He isn't accurate, with a 54.8 completion percentage. He threw half as many touchdowns as Tom Brady and it took him 15 more attempts to complete that incredible feat.
If the Jets didn't have a killer defense and Santonio Holmes, Sanchez would be much higher on this list.
9. Vince Young
2 of 10
I believe that Vince Young can be a pretty good quarterback in the NFL. He just has for knack at winning games when his team really shouldn't win. In fact, in nine games, he completed almost 60 percent of his passes and had 10 touchdowns to just three interceptions.
Unfortunately, Vince Young has the emotions of a eight-year-old girl.
I'm sorry, but in order to be a quarterback in the NFL, you need to be at least 85 percent man. I'm not saying you can't get emotional after a big win, but I am saying that you can't throw a hissy fit every time something bad happens to you.
Hopefully someone gives Vince Young a chance to play because, when on the field, he is very enjoyable to watch. For now, let us just remember the Vince Young that dazzled us during the 2006 Rose Bowl.
8. Rex Grossman
3 of 10
Had Rex Grossman played more games this year, I can guarantee that he would have been much higher on this list.
Rex Grossman is widely considered the worst quarterback to ever play in a Super Bowl. In the five games he played in this year, he had eight turnovers. In his eight seasons in the NFL, he has only played 41 games. If you take out his one full season in which he played all 16 games, that is 25 games in seven seasons.
My biggest concern with him playing in the Punt, Pass and Kick competition would be that he would get injured on his first throw and cost the competition lots and lots of money.
7. Chad Henne
4 of 10
With the sixth worst quarterback rating and fourth most interceptions, logically Chad Henne should be ranked fifth on this list.
I'll rank him at the number he wears on the field because I know there are six quarterbacks that played worse than him throughout this year. With the running game struggling so much for the Dolphins this year, Henne was forced to throw the ball quite a bit and Henne doesn't throw the ball very well when he throws it very much. 19 interceptions and only 15 touchdowns?
Did he forget that he had Brandon Marshall on his team? Even a fifth grader knows to just lob the ball in the air to Brandon Marshall and let him figure out how to catch it. Next year (if there is a next year), throw it high in the air, Chad, and watch Brandon work his magic.
6. Jake Delhomme
5 of 10
Jake Delhomme has been on a decline for the past few years, but I blame this ranking mainly on the Cleveland Browns.
Did they watch any of Carolina's games last year? The guy had 18 interceptions in 11 games. This is who they decided was going to be the savior of their franchise?
I like Jake Delhomme and I think he used to be a very good quarterback, but the man is getting old. And what was Jake thinking about when he decided to go to the Browns? It's the Browns, man! You could have done better.
5. Alex Smith
6 of 10
I feel like I have been hearing about how Alex Smith is going to have a breakout year since he was drafted.
The guy was a the No. 1 overall pick in the draft and has been benched more times than Chad Ochocinco's been fined for excessive celebration. Yet every year, I hear that this is the year he puts it all together.
This year he was benched for Troy Smith. Not bad overall stats, but in the NFL you have to win games and Alex Smith seems incapable of doing that. The worst part for the 49ers is that they picked Alex Smith instead of Aaron Rodgers, and look what Rodgers is doing now.
4. Brett Favre
7 of 10
Growing up as a Packer fan, Brett Favre was my hero for many years.
The improvisation, the toughness and the winning were all great for a fanbase that was hurting for such a long time. We were all saddened by his retirement and then all enraged by his betrayal. Families and friendships were broken and torn apart.
After a so-so year with the Jets, Brett continued to make Packer fans angry by playing and winning with the hated Minnesota Vikings.
This year, Favre was just old. 19 interceptions and a quarterback rating of under 70, along with multiple injuries and the end of the streak must make Favre wish he really retired before this year. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
3. Jimmy Clausen
8 of 10
I have to take it easy on Jimmy for two reasons: he is a rookie and his team is terrible.
However, no quarterback should go 202 straight passes without a touchdown.
In Week 16, Jimmy threw for an impressive 72 yards. 72 yards? To put that in prospective, 20 quarterbacks had a single pass go for more than 72 yards during the 2010 season. In 13 games, Clausen had three touchdowns and nine interceptions for a 58.4 quarterback rating.
Not good, Jimmy. Not good at all.
2. Derek Anderson
9 of 10
Derek Anderson had one good year and now continues his spiral into awfulness.
He has been replaced by Brady Quinn, Max Hall and John Skelton. That is not a list that any quarterback wants to be a part of. The problem with Derek Anderson is that he just can't keep the ball in his possession. 27 fumbles and 55 interceptions in 51 career games is not something to be proud of. He also only completes 53 percent of his passes, so it's not like he is accurate.
One thing he does have going for him is a great sense of humor, as he can laugh, even while losing. However, that great sense of humor is trumped by a terrible temper.
1. JaMarcus Russell
10 of 10
I know JaMarcus Russell didn't play football in 2010. I also know that his awfulness for the two years before 2010 make him absolutely deserving this spot.
Do I think he would lose a Punt, Pass and Kick competition to a 15 year old? He would definitely go into the competition as a favorite to win, but on the way, he would stop for a meal and a drink of that "purple drank" and pass out in a food and cough syrup coma before the competition would start, and therefore lose by default.
Here's to you, Mr. Russell, at least you won something in your lifetime.
