Philadelphia Eagles: Jim Washburn Named Defensive Line Coach

The Eagles recently created an opening at the defensive line coach position when they fired Rory Segrest. They filled that opening today when they hired Jim Washburn, who served the same position for the Tennessee Titans.

After spending 12 years with the Titans, Washburn said he was “ready to make a change” and said he “looked forward to moving to Philadelphia and joining a top-flight organization like the Eagles and work for a premier coach in Andy Reid.”

About the acquisition of Washburn, Reid had the following comments:

“We are thrilled to add a quality defensive line coach in Jim Washburn. He had a great tenure with Jeff Fisher and the Tennessee Titans and he’ll play a big part in the development of our defensive line moving forward. He’s had a number of Pro Bowl players working under him over the years with the Titans and we’re happy to have him join our coaching staff in Philadelphia.”

Personally, I believe this is a great addition for the Eagles. Segrest was named the defensive line coach after he failed to perform as the special teams coach. However, he failed to perform as the defensive line coach as well, and the Eagles had had enough.

Washburn knows what he is doing and has a long tenure coaching the defensive line. The Eagles have some pretty talented players along the line, but they haven’t been guided in the proper direction.

With the addition of Washburn, and hopefully the addition of an equal as talented defensive coordinator, the Eagles defensive line should see a lot of improvement.

I am very excited that the Eagles were able to bring in Washburn. We all know that our defense needs a lot of help, and I think this is a big step in the right direction.
