Bill Cowher: 10 Reasons He Won't Return to Coaching Until 2012

Brandon GalvinJun 2, 2018

Ever since Bill Cowher, former Super Bowl winning head coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers, showed the slightest interest in returning to the NFL coaching ranks, he has been rumored to “save” several franchises.

During the 2010 NFL regular season, it was rumored that Cowher was interested in joining the New York Giants, Houston Texans or Miami Dolphins.

Rumors heated up, of course, that Cowher would not only have his pick at any one of those three teams, but several others.

However, all three teams decided to retain their head coaches. It looks like Bill Cowher will stay on the sidelines for now. No, not those sidelines; the media sidelines. Occupied coaching positions are just one of the 10 reasons we will not see Bill Cowher return to coaching until at least 2012.

10. Recruitment Process

Cowher could very well enjoy the recruitment process. Management teams praising him in every way in order to bring him aboard.

It’s flattering.

Who wouldn’t want to feel coveted for at least another year and be showered with praise?

9. Failure

Cowher could be afraid of ruining his legacy if he were to rejoin the NFL coaching ranks and fail. Cowher went out on top with a Super Bowl, the way everyone wants to leave the game.

Would a failed attempt really ruin his legacy?

No, of course not.

However, he may not want the blemish on his portrait like what happened with Joe Gibbs.

8. Health

For all I know, Cowher is a healthy man.

Still, NFL coaches go through a grueling schedule.

It’s stressful. They don’t sleep much. There’s pressure. There’s a things a man can simply do without in his life.

Of course there are plenty of joys from coaching, but he may not be ready to commit just yet with these issues looming.

7. Public Perception

Some say Cowher only wants to coach a team on the brink of winning so he doesn’t have to put as much effort into rebuilding a team.

Cowher may want to let this perception die down before he jumps on with a team.

6. Looming Lockout

It’s a smart idea to wait and see what happens with the NFL and its looming lockout. There’s no point in jumping the gun to coach a team with this black cloud hovering over the NFL. Wait and see what happens and then rejoin the coaching ranks when everything is set in stone.

5. Maintain His Status

Cowher right now is regarded as the best free agent coach. He is also regarded as one of the best NFL coaches in history.

As far as I’m concerned for Cowher, I’d let everyone continue believing that.

Why not?

He has his Super Bowl and the coaching itch doesn’t seem as strong as we thought. Keep your legacy, Bill.

4. Choice of Team

It was rumored that Cowher had his eyes set on one of three potential coaching jobs: New York Giants, Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins.

All three teams retained their head coaches, leaving Cowher on the outside looking in once again.

If these are the teams Cowher desires, then he may want to wait another year to see if one of the jobs open up.

3. Commentating

Right now, Cowher has the dream job of millions of fans.

He gets to sit at a comfy desk surrounded by Hall of Famers and talk football.

Honestly, why would he leave this gig?

2. Desire

Cowher could just be toying with everyone, making them believe he still has interest in coaching.

For all we know, Cowher has no desire to coach anymore after achieving so much success in the grueling NFL.

They say the more you can’t have something, the more you want it. Cowher may need another year from being away from the game to truly feel that itch again.

1. Family

Cowher is a father and his family is going through a rough time. The family needs him close to home now more than ever. The timing may just not be right for Cowher and coaching at the moment.

The one thing a man needs to do is provide security for his family. It will be difficult for Cowher to do that if he is away.
