NFL Draft: 5 Non-Quarterbacks Tennessee Titans May Draft in Round 1

Blaize PenningtonJan 17, 2011

Heading into the 2011 NFL draft, the Titans are already chalked up to taking a quarterback. But what happens if there are two or three quarterbacks taken in front of them?

There is no reason to waste a eighth overall pick on the third or fourth best quarterback in the draft. So the Titans would either look to trade down or pick up one of these great players. Here are five draft prospects the Titans could take who are not quarterbacks.

Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama
The Titans only fault on their defensive line is their lack of size. Dareus at 6’3″ 309 lbs would bulk their defensive line up. He played great for Alabama all year. Dareus would not be a stat machine, but would rather eat up double teams in order to make room for the linebackers to make plays.

Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M
Miller is arguably the best pass rusher at the college level. He would add another dimension to the Titans defense. It is unclear if he would translate into an outside linebacker or a defensive end, but would be able to play either position for the Titans.

Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina
This would be a risky pick as Quinn has not played for a year but, depending on his combine statistics, he could be a real gem. Quinn would be a perfect compliment to Derick Morgan on the defensive line and together they could be as good as the Freeney-Mathis combination.

Aldon Smith, OLB, Missouri
Smith is, flat out, an athlete. His ability allows him to play wherever he would be needed. He could play in the 4-3 or the 3-4. Aldon Smith would be an immediate upgrade at the outside linebacker position and could become a staple for the Titans’ defense for years to come.

Derrick Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State
Sherrod is the best offensive lineman in the draft. If the Titans do decide to upgrade their offensive line with the eighth overall pick this would be the guy to get. He is very big at 6’5″ 305lbs which would allow him to play the guard spot if needed. The Titans have stated that they're happy with their offensive line, but when it comes to the NFL draft, you cannot believe anything a team says.
