NFL Rumors: Where Will Former Coaches Dave Wannstedt and Brad Childress End Up?

Brandon BeckerJan 13, 2011

Dave Wannstedt and Brad Childress both have had head coaching jobs at the NFL level and are now seeking to find employment as assistants. Neither have drawn any recent interest to become head coaches again, but are drawing heavy interest in coordinator positions.

Wannstedt was a successful defensive coordinator in the late '80s early '90s with the Dallas Cowboys. While he never had great success as an NFL or college coach, he is still a coveted man.

The vast amount of experience Wannstedt has, along with a solid track record when he's been a DC, is why so many teams are interested in his services. There are reportedly five teams that would like to sit down with Wannstedt or have discussed the possibility of him as an option. Of the five teams, the Buffalo Bills seem like the favorite having met with them today.

As far as Childress goes, it is looking more and more like he is going to be the next offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins. Childress was also rumored to be a candidate to become the St. Louis Rams' new OC, but apparently that isn't going to happen.

So with Wannstedt looking like the new Bills' DC and Childress the new OC of the Dolphins, how big of a difference will they make?

That's a question that won't be answered right away, but looking at the track record of the two, you can expect Miami to implement elements of the West Coast offense into its system. Childress comes from the Andy Reid school of thinking: short passes, use the running back in the passing game and show a variety of different formations.

The success of Childress' offenses in Minnesota varied mostly because of inconsistent quarterback play. In Brett Favre's first season with the Vikings, Minnesota was one of the better offenses in the league, but prior to No. 4 arriving, it was the defensive side of the ball where the Vikes thrived.

Maybe a change of personnel will allow Childress to thrive.

If Wannstedt does get hired by Buffalo his role will be as an assistant head coach. It doesn't appear that he will be running the defense but instead will be in an oversight position with the team.

Childress and Wannstedt haven't had success recently in larger roles; switching back to smaller positions could be exactly what the two need to find their footing again.
