Adds and Drops: Expectations For an Interesting Redskins Offseason

B.J MakJan 11, 2011

This article is in place to give a fans' perspective of what could be done in the offseason. No I am not a GM but I'd like to think my opinion is similar to those of other fans. The Skins have needs at OL, WR, DE, OLB, NT and FS mainly. Dan Snyder is never scared to spend the big $ so I wouldn't be surprised if he makes some big acquisitions.

Drop O-Lineman: Rabach, Heyer

Casey Rabach's departure is long overdue. He's old and no longer even a serviceable starter. He had some solid seasons for the Skins but it doesn't look like he can play any longer at an NFL caliber level. Erick Cook could jump into the spot at center although that seems slightly premature. I see the Skins drafting Stefen Wisniewski out of Penn State who is the top ranked center in the draft (2nd round pick). He's a big athletic guy who fits perfectly in the zone blocking scheme, and he and Williams should be the anchors of our line for years to come.

Stephon Heyer. Human penalty and sack machine. Enough said.

Other possible cuts from the O-line: Artis Hicks and Derrick Dockery.

Both of these players are serviceable veterans but then again they were supposed to be starters and are being paid in that way. Both could help as far as depth but neither will make a significant impact.

The Rest Of The Offense

At the WR position, besides Santana Moss we have no need for any veterans. Joey Galloway and Roydell Williams were absolutely horrific. Terrance Austin, Brandon Banks and Anthony Armstrong provide youth and a spark for the receiving game that these soon to be departing vets no longer contain. I could see the Skins targeting a FA to look for a taller physical receiver, as most of the Skins receivers are mainly in the smaller and quicker category.

QB and RB: Don't really see many sore thumbs in this group. James Davis could be cut, and Rex Grossman can be lost to FA. Would love to see a speedster change of pace back to add to Ryan Torain and Keiland Williams' bruising running style.

Donovan McNabb: DNabb needs to be cut or traded. He is way too expensive and didn't perform well at all. If we could trade him to another team for a pick in the draft that would be a gift but doesn't seem likely, so the Skins should dump him and move on.

D Line: Maake Kemoeatu really didn't live up to his preseason talk. He didn't provide much pressure and didn't stuff up the run game much either. Anthony Bryant moved in quickly and had a end to the season and greatly outplayed Maake.

Jeremy Jarmon: Jarmon was a supplemental 3rd round pick under the previous coaching regime. He has had a hard time switching to the 3-4 and has also battled injury problems. Doesn't seem like he's worth the time and effort to coach up if he's going to tweak his ankle every other week.

Safeties: One has got to go and it's not going to be Reed Doughty or La'Ron Landry. Chris Horton has battled injury problems and Kareem Moore more played like he was afraid to touch the opposing team. I say cut them both. Neither has showed much (Horton had a nice rookie season), and it's time to move on with players who will do their job right. Doughty doesn't make amazing plays but he rarely misses a tackle or lets a receiver behind him. Also Kevin Barnes could fill in if the coaches like what they saw of him at FS.

Linebackers: Looks like Andre Carter is on his way out. It's sad that he has to leave the Skins in such a fashion but he simply doesn't fit the scheme. He had a great 2009 campaign so hopefully some other teams will scoop him up. Rob Jackson filled in nicely and the draft is loaded with talented linebackers (Miller, Ayers) who could solidify that 4th linebacker. Also Rocky McIntosh seemed a bit lost, so if he comes looking for a fat contract he should be turned down for someone who fits the 3-4 better.

Corner: Phillip Buchanon needs to go. He was very inconsistent this year, and is not worth the extra roster spot. Kevin Barnes played admirably at safety but also could be a solid nickel corner.

Almost forgot about Albert Haynesworth...he looks like he's gone but you never know with Shanny in town.

I believe that with our first overall pick the Skins should select Akeem Ayers out of UCLA. He is a great 3-4 OLB who played in a partially 3-4 scheme at UCLA. He possesses great size and is also a great playmaker. He can rush the passer but is an all around linebacker who won't be a liability in coverage when Brian Orakpo is blitzing. He is projected to be a mid to late-teen pick so maybe the Skins could get an extra draft pick in the process.

With the second round pick as I mentioned earlier, the Skins' would select Stefen Wisniewski, a C/OG from Penn State. He is athletic and fits perfectly in Shanahan's zone blocking scheme while also adding versatility. Easily the best center in the draft.

With the 5th round pick I believe that the Skins will grab NT Kendrick Ellis, a Division IAA monster who amassed 15 TFL as a junior. He eats space and is able to penetrate the backfield and will provide young depth at a very important position.

With the first of two 6th round picks I believe the Skins take Mike Mohammed. He is an inside linebacker for Cal. He notched 111 tackles and was the anchor of their 3-4 defense. Fletcher is getting old and Perry Riley was best known for blocks in the back on several big returns by Brandon Banks. Mohammed won't need to change his style much and is a big physical guy who can shed some blocks and tackle.

With the later 6th rounder, the Skins take Cedric Thornton, DE out of Central Arkansas. He is a small school sleeper who has wreaked havoc in the backfield applying pressure as well as stuffing the run as a 3-4. I realize this is a lot of picks on he defensive side, but with a change in scheme it is essential that the Skins stock up on players whose talents fit the 3-4.

With the final pick in the draft I believe the Skins take Georgia OG/OT Clint Boling. Clint is a big guy with pretty nimble footwork. He stepped outside to T from OG and played very well. He fits the zone blocking scheme and provides versatility.

GLENDALE, AZ - SEPTEMBER 02: Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth #92 of the Washington Redskins battles for position with Alan Faneca #66 of the Arizona Cardinals during preseason NFL game at the University of Phoenix Stadium on September 2, 2010 in Glen

Alan Faneca: A veteran OG who can help the running game and can also mentor our young O-lineman for a couple years (doesn't look too bad against Haynesworth).

Vincent Jackson: A great big and tall WR who will instantly give opponents a threat for a big play. Shanahan wanted V-Jax in Denver so I'm sure Snyder will throw some money at Jackson to make his coach happy.

Brodney Pool: A decent FS who will provide depth at the position. Better than Moore and Horton and more athletic that Doughty.

Aubrayo Franklin: A big NT who could immediately help in the middle. Franklin is not too happy with the 49ers and might be let go with the new coaching there. Won't come cheap but an immense talent at a bigger position.

Darren Sproles: An amazingly quick RB who can also receive out of the backfield. Cheaper than DeAngelo Williams and Bradshaw who are other pricier options.

Other Possibilities:

Deuce Lutui (OG)

Malcolm Floyd (WR)

Sidney Rice (WR)

Braylon Edwards (WR)

James Anderson (ILB)

Antonio Cromartie (CB) - could maybe be converted to FS

Ahmad Bradshaw (RB)

-Definitely-

Santana Moss: One of the more admirable players on the team. Never complains due to the lack of talent around him, and consistently produced no matter who the QB is.

Rex Grossman: Although not amazing, one of the better options out there. May be Kyle Orton but either way the Skins aren't getting their QB of the future till 2012 (hopefully...I would hate to see Cam Newton on our team with the first pick).

-Maybe-

Carlos Rogers: Seems that CR22 is starting to gel with the team and defense. He said he wants to be back and has been great in coverage and run support. Could be elite if he could catch the damn ball.

Jammal Brown: Started off slow and injured but picked up his game and played well in run blocking on the right side. He wants to go back to the left side where he could get more money but if we can keep him for a good price, then why not.
