2011 NFL Free Agents: Top 10 NFL Teams That Are One Big Name Away From Playoffs
There are plenty of NFL teams sitting there thinking, "What if ?"
What if they had that one key addition? The NFL continues to show that one or two key players can be the difference between being in the cellar and making the playoffs. St. Louis won just one game last year, then drafted Sam Bradford and came one game shy of making the postseason this year. With the parity that exists, massive turnarounds are possible in just a short time.
If they could get one more key player, these 10 teams could be in the playoffs next year:
10. Miami Dolphins
1 of 10
Biggest weakness: Miami obviously needs a quarterback, but the wise move would be to find a franchise quarterback in the draft. That also leaves running back. Ronnie Brown led the Dolphins with 734 yards rushing, and the team is 21st in rushing, with just under 103 yards per game.
Who they could sign: DeAngelo Williams, Carolina. He's shared the backfield with Jonathan Stewart, and could be a perfect feature back.
9. Tennessee Titans
2 of 10
Biggest weakness: Quarterback. Now that the Vince Young era is over, the Titans need to solve this issue. You can obviously target a longterm solution in the draft, but in the meantime, there's other temporary options available. Besides quarterback, the team could also use a big play receiver.
Who they could sign: Donovan McNabb. If he decides to leave Washington, Tennessee could be a great fit. If he heads to Arizona, it may be worth a gamble to look at Oakland's Bruce Gradkowski or Alex Smith of San Francisco.
8. Oakland Raiders
3 of 10
Biggest weakness: Offensive line. The Raiders surrendered a total of 44 sacks this year and need to improve at the tackle positions.
Who they could sign: Matt Light, New England. He's 33 and had a rough year, but could be tossed aside with Sebastian Vollmer's emergence. Light's body of work can't be ignored, though, and he would be worth the risk if you're the Raiders.
7. New York Giants
4 of 10
Biggest weakness: Outside linebacker. Middle linebacker Jonathan Goff (80 tackles) and outside linebacker Michael Boley (86) had solid seasons, but the Giants could benefit from adding someone opposite Boley.
Who they could sign: The Giants should take a shot at Minnesota's Chad Greenway, and they could also look at Scott Shanle at New Orleans, a blue-collar player who's had five very quality seasons with the Saints.
6. Detroit Lions
5 of 10
Biggest weakness: Cornerback. The Lions allowed nearly 219 yards passing per game this year. Most draft projections have had the Lions picking a cornerback, but they could also bolster the position via free agency as well.
Who they could sign: Ike Taylor (pictured), Pittsburgh. He has 66 tackles, 11 pass deflections and two interceptions this year. He's been one of Pittsburgh's most consistent players and helped them cover the run, too.
5. Houston Texans
6 of 10
Biggest weakness: It's a tossup here between the secondary and defensive end. The Texans could answer this in the draft with the No.11 pick in the first round, but there are options available in free agency. Head coach Gary Kubiak is hoping to correct the defense by adding Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator, who will look to improve a unit that allowed an NFL worst 267.5 yards passing per game.
Who they could sign: Johnathan Joseph, Cincinnati. The Bengals cornerback finished the year with 42 tackles, eight pass deflections and three interceptions.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars
7 of 10
Biggest weakness: Secondary. It's definitely a weakness when you're allowing over 250 yards passing per game.
Who they could sign: Nnamdi Asomugha (pictured), Oakland. The Pro Bowl cornerback is now a free agent, due to clauses in his contract involving incentives he didn't achieve and the stipulation that he wouldn't be designated the franchise player if he didn't reach those numbers.
3. San Diego Chargers
8 of 10
Biggest weakness: Wide receiver. Philip Rivers' top receiver was tight end Antonio Gates, who had 50 catches for 782 yards. He was also the only player with double-digit touchdown receptions. You'd hope they could add another legitimate threat to go with Patrick Crayton, Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd.
Who they could sign: Ben Obomanu, Seattle. He's tied for a team-high in touchdown receptions (four) and is averaging 16.5 yards per catch.
2. Minnesota Vikings
9 of 10
Biggest weakness: Quarterback. Brett Favre is gone, leaving backup Tavaris Jackson and third stringer Joe Webb (pictured). Now there is the option for Minnesota to go after Donovan McNabb if he chooses to leave Washington. Most speculation centers around them drafting a quarterback, so for now, they would need a stopgap.
Who they could sign: Matt Moore, Carolina. This is such a no-brainer, Minnesota should pounce on it.
1. Dallas Cowboys
10 of 10
Biggest weakness: Secondary. The Cowboys gave up 243 yards passing per game and still don't have a true legitimate shutdown corner. Most draft predictions also have Dallas selecting a cornerback or defensive lineman.
Who they could sign: Champ Bailey, Denver. Jerry Jones has the money, and you know Bailey would love to play for a winner after his time with the Broncos.
