Nnamdi Asomugha Contract Voided: 10 Potential New Homes For Raiders CB
Nnamdi Asomugha was one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL over the past few seasons, yet had a down year in 2010. He failed to record an interception or forced fumble, made minimal tackles and was let go by the Oakland Raiders as a result.
Whether you believe that Asomugha is starting to show wear and tear or that his stats are down because he's so good that people won't throw to him (Darrelle Revis had no picks and few tackles this year as well), the fact remains that Asomugha would be a very valuable piece for any team looking for a cornerback. What are the best potential destinations for the now-free agent, aside from "every other team in the league?"
10. Detroit Lions
1 of 10
The Detroit Lions are a rising team in the league, and a shutdown corner in the secondary to pair with Ndamukong Suh on the line could make them a force for years to come. It's not all that likely to happen, but with the Lions falling too far down in the draft to get Patrick Peterson or Prince Amukamara, it's a good possibility.
9. Denver Broncos
2 of 10
I think the Denver Broncos have their eyes set on Patrick Peterson to replace Champ Bailey, but would they find having an already-proven cornerback to be a better investment? It's a possibility. Drafting Peterson and signing Asomugha would be overkill, and there's no chance of that, so it will be one or the other.
Beyond that, a Tim Tebow/Asomugha combo would make Denver Broncos win the role model award every year.
8. Indianapolis Colts
3 of 10
The shine is starting to come off of the Indianapolis Colts, and they need to make some moves to stay competitive. Putting Asomugha alongside Kelvin Hayden would shore up a secondary that made few interceptions this past season, and would help out when Hayden or Sanders are out due to injury.
7. Green Bay Packers
4 of 10
The Green Bay Packers have a good defense that was riddled by injury this past year. Picking up Asomugha would be conditional on Charles Woodson entering free agency or retiring, as Woodson and Tramon Williams make a great team as is. If he leaves, the Packers could stick Asomugha in and they wouldn't miss a beat on defense.
6. Baltimore Ravens
5 of 10
The Baltimore Ravens' secondary will be entering free agency, so the team will be looking to rebuild that part of their defense. Adding in Asomugha and re-signing Josh Wilson would make for a great secondary, along with Dawan Landry and Ed Reed.
5. New England Patriots
6 of 10
The New England Patriots are a fearsome team on offense, but did have a few holes on defense this past season. Devin McCourty has emerged as a standout corner, and pairing him with Asomugha would make for a feared secondary that already is good on the interception front.
4. Cleveland Browns
7 of 10
Much like the Patriots, the Cleveland Browns have a breakout young corner in Joe Haden, and combined with T.J. Ward the secondary is one of the strengths of the team. Adding in Asomugha would add in a sorely needed playmaker, and the Browns can focus on improving a bad defensive line in the draft.
3. Houston Texans
8 of 10
Any move is an improvement with how bad the Houston Texans' defense is. Glover Quin and Kareem Jackson aren't too bad, but Asomugha is of course an improvement over both. The Texans need to do more of an overhaul rather than finding a playmaker, but an Asomugha/Mario Williams combo on each defensive end is certainly a start.
Bringng in Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator might make signing with the Texans more appealing as well.
2. San Francisco 49ers
9 of 10
The San Francisco 49ers are a team in transition. They have a new coach in Jim Harbaugh and will most likely have a new quarterback. Should they add a defensive playmaker in Asomugha, that would make for a great team moving forward in the coming years, should the first two work out.
1. Dallas Cowboys
10 of 10
Combining Terence Newman with Asomugha would shore up the secondary and would help the Dallas Cowboys return to greatness. Keeping Jason Garrett on will help, and they have several other strong points on defense. It's a great move, and he seems like he would fit perfectly on the Cowboys, and the Cowboys can use their draft pick to shore up the defensive line.
