NFL Playoffs: Predictions and Odds to Win the Super Bowl
The NFL playoffs are here and the Super bowl title is up for grabs.
All of the teams that are in the playoffs have a shot of winning it all, but some of the odds stacked against them.
Here is a look at every team in the playoffs, the odds of winning the Super bowl and a prediction on what team with be hoisting the Lombardi trophy this year.
Seattle Seahawks
1 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 140 to 1
The odds are stacked against the Seahawks and they should be, considering they did not finish above .500.
The Seahawks squeaked into the playoffs with a home win over the St. Louis Rams, but stumble into the postseason with a 1-3 record down the stretch.
Pete Carroll should be happy that he “won” the NFC West, but that should be the extent of his accomplishments as a first-year head coach.
First up for the birds is the defending champion New Orleans Saints. The Saints are betting in nearly every position and the only thing that favors the Seahawks in this opener is home field advantage.
The Seahawks have the loudest outdoor stadium in the league and the Saints will have to travel and play outdoors in the weather.
With no pressure on this Seattle team to produce, they could play the Saints tough but putting money on them to win the Super Bowl is as good as burning it.
Prediction: Not a chance
Kansas City Chiefs
2 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 48 to 1
Talk about your disrespect.
The Kansas City Chiefs have had a great year and won the AFC West in convincing fashion, but have the worst odds to win the Super Bowl than any team in the playoffs, besides Seattle.
They have a two-headed monster in a running attack led by the explosive Jamaal Charles and veteran Thomas Jones. Dwayne Bowe has emerged as a threat at wide receiver and the Chiefs have one of the best home field advantages in the playoffs.
They lead the entire league at rushing the ball at 164 yards a game. The one problem is that the AFC seems stacked with talent, starting with their opponent for Wild Card Weekend in the Baltimore Ravens.
The Ravens have the fifth best run defense in the league, but have had trouble with teams like the Bengals this year.
The Chiefs will not win the Super bowl, but they should get more credit than that are right now. Don’t be surprised if they upset the Baltimore Ravens this weekend.
Prediction: A nice long shot
New York Jets
3 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 28 to 1
If you’re a believer in Jets head coach Rex Ryan, than these odds look pretty tasty. According to Ryan and many other blind Jet followers, they are going to win it all.
That’s highly unlikely.
The Jets don’t have the same defense that they had last year and they are vulnerable to the big play. Mark Sanchez is inconsistent and has an injured shoulder.
The Jets will only go as far as their defense brings them, but that might be asking a lot considering the opposition.
The Jets will go up against Hall-of-Famer-to-be Peyton Manning and if they win will have to face the possible MVP in Tom Brady at Foxboro.
That is just too much to ask for a Jets team with too many question marks.
Prediction: Road too tough
Indianapolis Colts
4 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 17 to 1
The Colts have Peyton Manning under center and as long as he is healthy, anything is possible.
The problem is he has made a lot of mistakes this year. The Colts are 0-4 in games where he has thrown at least two interceptions and that is very un-Peyton like.
The Colts defense will not hold up through the postseason. They are 20th overall in total defense in the NFL and the secondary is suspect.
If the pass rush is nullified, then they can be exposed through the air. The offensive lines are good enough in the AFC to stop the pass rush, which means Peyton will have to carry the load.
Without much help, the Colts won’t go far.
Prediction: Peyton or bust
Baltimore Ravens
5 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 13 to 1
While many experts are circling the Green Bay Packers as the deadliest wild card team in the playoffs, I will take a shot on the Baltimore Ravens.
They are loaded with experience on the defensive side of the ball with intimidator Ray Lewis and the ball-hawking Ed Reed.
Reed missed games due to injury, but is still on top of the league with interceptions this year.
The offense is workable with Ray Rice running the ball and Joe Flacco finally has weapons to throw too.
The most important thing in favor of the Ravens is that they play well against the favorites in the AFC. They always play tight against the rival Steelers and they lost on the road to New England in overtime.
If there is a long shot in the AFC that can win it all, it’s the Ravens.
Prediction: The best long shot for the money
Green Bay Packers
6 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 12 to 1
This is the team that everyone expects to emerge as an upset special.
Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the league and is in charge of an explosive offense, but the true strength of this team may be the defense.
Clay Matthews has emerged as a sack specialist in his rookie year and the defense ranks fifth overall in total defense, allowing 194 yards a game.
It is obvious that the Packers are a dangerous team, but they have a very tough path to the Super Bowl that would include beating Philadelphia twice in one year at home.
The first time they beat them, they had to face Kevin Kolb for most of the game and this time they will have to try and stop Michael Vick.
The Packers have just three victories on the road this season. While it’s a fun thought, the Packers won’t get to the Super Bowl.
Prediction: Odds are too good to be true
Philadelphia Eagles
7 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 11 to 1
Are you on the Michael Vick bandwagon yet? I am.
He has turned this team around and with the exception of a re-scheduled game against the Minnesota Vikings, he has looked great all year. Vick seem to be a perfect complement to a speedy, sure-handed, wide receiving core that can stretch the field.
When they are covered, he will burn a defense with his legs.
The defense is the 12th-ranked unit in the NFL and with a healthy Asante Samuel; the Eagles can take flight in the playoffs and win the Super Bowl.
It would be one helluva story, if Vick returned to win the championship.
Prediction: The best dark horse in the NFC
Chicago Bears
8 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 10 to 1
The Bears have surprised plenty of NFL experts by winning their division and nabbing the second seed in the playoffs.
Mike Martz decided his offense would work best if they actually started running the ball; that turned the corner for a team that had trouble protecting the mistake-prone Jay Cutler.
The defense is playing some great football lately and rank second in the NFL against the rush as they allow 90 yards per contest. Overall, they are the 9th-rated defense in the NFL, but the true strength of this Bears team is special teams.
Devin Hester is a game changer and opposing teams are plain stupid if they kick the ball to him.
The Bears are a quality ball club, but putting trust in Cutler at quarterback is a real gamble.
The Bears may live to regret not beating the Green Bay Packers in Week 17.
Prediction: Wishful Thinking
New Orleans Saints
9 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 9.5 to 1
The defending Super Bowl champions are a dark horse to win it all again? That seems like good news for a team that has the talent and the experience to do it again.
Last year, Drew Brees and an explosive offense teamed up with an opportune defense to bring a title to the Big Easy.
Things look good for this team as they start the playoff run out in Seattle against a team that lost by an average of 21 points per game.
This run is a bit different as the Saints made their run last year at home in a comfy dome. If they want to return this year, they will have to brave the elements and win outside.
In fact the only time they could go inside is when and if they face the Atlanta Falcons. Their division rival who will be out for revenge after getting their logo stomped on during a Monday night loss.
Prediction: It’s midnight Cinderella
Atlanta Falcons
10 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 5.8 to 1
The Atlanta Falcons were the best team in the NFC in 2010, but are getting little hype compared to some other teams in the league.
Teams in the NFC like the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints are getting more press and the Falcons will look to make people notice in the postseason.
This is a very good Atlanta team and they are dominant at home and as of right now, the road to the Super Bowl goes through Atlanta. They have a bruising running game with Michael Turner and a skilled quarterback in Matt Ryan.
Ryan has an arsenal at his disposal in speedster Roddy White and the always reliable Tony Gonzalez.
The Falcons defense is vastly improved but if they have a weakness, it’s the pass defense that ranks 22nd overall in the NFL. That could hurt against some of the top quarterbacks in the league.
Getting to the Super Bowl may be a reality, but winning it could be asking too much.
Prediction: Close, but not this year
Pittsburgh Steelers
11 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 5.6 to 1
It is no surprise that the Steelers are one of the best teams in the league and one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl.
They have a great signal caller in Ben Roethlisberger, who is nearly impossible to take down in the pocket. They have a smash mouth rushing attack that can take down the toughest of defenses, and experience in big ball games.
Troy Polamalu is the defensive MVP of this defense and is back and healthy for the playoff run.
The Steelers displayed a weakness against the pass when they faced Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, but they would love another shot at the Pats in the AFC Championship. The Steelers have improved on their pass defense since the last meeting.
Wide receiver Mike Wallace is a playmaker and is considered one of the fastest players in the NFL.
Prediction: Can’t argue with backing the Steelers
New England Patriots
12 of 13
Odds to win the Super Bowl: 1.8 to 1
The New England Patriots are the odds-on favorite to win the Super Bowl.
It’s hard to argue with the kind of football that this team is playing right now. The turnover ratio of +28 is a number that you will hear a lot about leading up to any game involving the Patriots.
They just don’t turn the ball over and that is huge in the postseason. Tom Brady is having an MVP year and leading his usual team of misfits to the promise land.
Danny Woodhead is a cult hero in New England and Wes Welker and Deion Branch are sure-handed receivers.
The biggest story might be the emergence of the Patriot rookie tight ends in Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski. Hernandez is a big wide receiver in a tight end position and Gronkowski is a huge target in the end zone.
Bill Belichick is the mad genius behind this group and he has a defense playing great football heading into the postseason.
Prediction: They are favorites for a reason
NFL Playoff Predictions
13 of 13
AFC: In the AFC, it comes down to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots.
The Baltimore Ravens have a chance to make some noise against one of the favorites, but they will have to win on the road and that is asking too much.
The Steelers beat the Patriots in a great game and advance to the Super Bowl.
NFC: The Saints have too tough a road and may lose in the Windy City or at least Atlanta.
While Green Bay looks legitimate, they will lose this week to the Eagles. This sets up a perfect storyline with Vick returning to Atlanta to play in a huge game. Vick wins and the Eagles head off to the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl: The Pittsburgh Steelers against the Philadelphia Eagles in what should be a really great super Bowl. The Michael Vick story is great but there is not a happy ending as the Steelers win another Super Bowl.
Super bowl Pick: Steelers 5.6 to 1
