NFL Losers Need Love Too

Rob MurrayJan 3, 2011

With the NFL regular season done, all the talking heads will turn their attention to the playoffs.

Not me, that’s not my style. I want to focus my energy on the losers of the NFL. Those unlucky 20 teams that aren’t coached by Bill Belichick, quarterbacked by Peyton Manning or led by Troy Polamalu.

I’m talking about the 20 teams that will not be playing football again until September of 2011.

While I certainly plan on delivering a more in-depth breakdown of these teams in the future, here are some quick thoughts on these teams. Today, I’ll start with ten (the rest tomorrow), just because I’m lazy and I get cranky when I miss Desperate Housewives.

Fun fact, the Carolina Panthers have had only three head coaches in their 16-year existence (Dom Capers, George Seifert and, most recently, John Fox). Starting today, they’ll be looking for their fourth coach.

The Panthers will probably chase some former head coaches (Cowher or Gruden), but if they’re looking for a new beginning, why not start fresh?

Mamma always said, why chase after an old Playboy Playmate, when you can go out and find the next one. If I’m making the decisions, I’m taking a stab at Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh.

Yeah, I know he's rumored to be going to SF, but I would just tempt him with Andrew Luck as the first pick in the draft.

Is this Tim Tebow’s team now? Sure looks like it. Of course, does it matter?

The Broncos lost 11 games this year because they couldn’t stop my crippled grandmother from gaining five yards on a simple counter play (granted, she had a quick first step back in the day).

Denver was 31st against the run, which is only slightly better than their 25th ranking against the pass.

Look for Denver to bring a defensive-minded head coach and begin to fill up some of these gaps via free agency (Mathias Kiwanuka, anyone?) and the draft (Da-Quan Bowers?).

For a long while the Bills were the little engine that couldn’t and became American’s favorite underdog. Despite coming oh-so close so many times, they just couldn’t get that win.

That is until Week 10 and we stopped paying attention.

After watching Tom Brady own the AFC East the past decade-ish, the Buffalo faithful certainly know the value of a great quarterback (and a comfy pair of Uggs). With the third pick in the 2011 draft, they’re going to be begging for one.

I’m just not so sure it’s the right call.

I know Ryan Fitzgerald is no Jim Kelly. I know his numbers dipped in the last few weeks, but he was 4-4 as a starter in his last eight games and that’s not tragic. The reality is, Buffalo needs help at a lot of places; most pressing is the defensive line spot.

The DL free agent pool is deep, but there are some impressive rookie linemen coming in as well. The Bills really could use someone who can sack a quarterback. Buffalo produced only 27 sacks this season. Less than two per game.

I'm not the smartest cookie in the jar, but that's not a lot.
