Jim Harbaugh, Denver Broncos: Why John Elway Could Lure Him To the Mile High

Chris TrapassoJan 3, 2011

Jim Harbaugh to the Denver Broncos?

Yeah, it could happen.

Stanford's head coach has been linked to the vacant coaching position in San Francisco with the 49ers, and will be at the top of the Michigan Wolverines' list if and when they fire failed coach Rich Rodriguez.

But as we've come to know, in the NFL anything is possible and the Denver Broncos organization would love to lure Harbaugh to the Mile High City.

Broncos legend John Elway reportedly will be named the VP of football operations this week and he's already made it clear he'll be speaking with Harbaugh in an attempt to bring him on as the next head coach.

It won't be easy, but Elway's presence alone coupled with these few selling points could make Harbaugh to the Broncos an ideal fit.

First, Elway won't have a hard time relating to Harbaugh, both having played quarterback at a high level during the 1990s. This may seem unimportant, but meeting with someone like Elway will be much more comfortable for Harbaugh than talking to a 65-year-old owner with no football playing background.

The Broncos are in rebuilding mode, a similar situation to that of the Stanford program when Harbaugh took over in December of 2006.

He's made great strides with the probable No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck, so you'd think Harbaugh would like to have a talented quarterback he can work with to improve. He'll have that in Denver with Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow on the roster. He could also have a fantastic quarterback competition in training camp, one that'll certainly push both signal callers.

Also, Harbaugh would be walking into the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, certainly an enticing spot to be in.

The Broncos are in desperate need of a boost on defense, and this year's draft class has several defensive prospects that have enough pro potential to be taken No. 2 overall.A top defensive draft pick along with the return of Elvis Dumervil and you got a defense with upside.

Lastly, the Broncos offense is underrated and in better shape than many think. Second-year running back Knowshon Moreno averaged 4.3 yards per carry this year, and wideout Brandon Lloyd led the NFL with 1,448 receiving yards. Don't forget Jabar Gaffney and the promising Demaryius Thomas.

That'd be an easy sell for Elway, as Harbaugh would have the tools to mold a high-flying offense in the future.

Elway could have more in his persuasion package, but those are the most clear-cut selling points that could bring Jim Harbaugh to the sidelines of Invesco Field and make him a success as the next Denver Broncos head coach.

It could happen.
