NFL Free Agency Rumors: 15 Aging Free Agents Who Deserve One More Year
NFL free agency rumors should be heating up in no time now, and it's time to take a look at the older guys who are hitting the free agent pool this year. These guys aren't what they used to be, but they're still great players and can bring something to the team.
We have 15 guys who qualify. We're breaking them down and telling you why teams should bring them in for one more go around or longer.
Any guys I missed? Make sure to leave them in the comments section.
No. 15: Matt Hasselbeck
1 of 15
Matt Hasselbeck has had a good run in Seattle, but I think that's come to an end.
Hasselbeck has struggled on the field and with injuries this season, and it's time for him to find a change of scenery to try and resurrect his career. While he's not the quarterback that he used to be, he's still got something left in the tank.
He could be the bridge to a new era if a team drafts a young quarterback, but doesn't want to throw him into the fire right away.
No. 14: Alan Faneca
2 of 15
Alan Faneca has been a force at guard for years, and even though he's a tad on the older side, I'd be interested in him.
Faneca is a veteran who has been on some winning teams in his career and can lead a locker room and be a stabilizing force on and off the field. He can help create running lanes and pass block.
I think he'll get a couple of calls this offseason.
No. 13: Olin Kreutz
3 of 15
Olin Kreutz is another guy who can help stabilize an offensive line.
Kreutz has been a beast in Chicago for years and is a center who can help a team with issues. You know the Bears are going to want to bring him back, and he's a leader. He has been a captain for the Bears and is one of the cornerstones of his team.
He'll get a nice paycheck this year.
No. 12: Desmond Clark
4 of 15
Desmond Clark is a veteran tight end who can do it all, and that makes him valuable to potential teams.
Clark can be an effective piece in an offense, even if he's not a guy like Antonio Gates or Vernon Davis. He's a big part of what the Bears do, even if he doesn't fit into Jay Cutler's downfield throwing style. Clark's been a consistent player for years and could be valuable to a lot of teams out there.
Chicago will push to keep him, but I could see him going elsewhere.
No. 11: Ronnie Brown
5 of 15
Ronnie Brown is a guy who you might not think is an aging player, but in running back years, he is.
Brown's been around for six seasons, and there are a lot of miles on those tires. He's been effective for the Dolphins, but struggled big time this year. Dolphins fans and fantasy owners alike were extremely disappointed in the guy who ran the Wildcat to perfection just a few short years ago.
I think he'll catch on somewhere, whether it's Miami or somewhere else.
No. 10: Richard Seymour
6 of 15
Richard Seymour can really bolster a defensive line, even if he isn't the same player he was back in New England.
Seymour wasn't happy when he was traded to Oakland, and he'll test the open market and look for a situation to his liking. That should spark the interest of a lot of teams out there, and Seymour will listen.
He's not washed up, and there's no reason a team shouldn't take a chance on him.
No. 9: Takeo Spikes
7 of 15
Takeo Spikes has been around for what feels like forever, but he's always been productive.
Spikes was a beast in San Francisco and broke 100 tackles on the season, which is quite the impressive feat and something that should be applauded at his stage of his career. He won't come with a huge price tag and should have numerous suitors.
I'd take a chance on him if I'm a general manger.
No. 8: Darren Sharper
8 of 15
Darren Sharper always seems to find his way around the ball to make plays.
While he isn't as physically gifted as he used to be, he can make plays, and a lot of teams could use someone like that. I think Sharper is going to test the market while the Saints try to keep him around, and it should be interesting to see where he lands.
I'd love someone like Sharper on my team. He's the type of player that keeps a team together.
No. 7: David Akers
9 of 15
While kickers last forever, David Akers has been around forever and is the longest-tenured Philadelphia Eagle.
He's also one of the more consistent kickers in the league, and I think the Eagles are going to bring hm back not just for one year, but for more years on top of that. Good kickers aren't a common commodity and Akers is one of the best.
The fans love him and he loves the team, so he'll be around and deservedly so.
No. 6: Pat Williams
10 of 15
Pat Williams is a mountain of a man who has been around for awhile and has been clogging up the middle forever.
He's a free agent and isn't sure if he's going to be back. There are plenty of teams who could use a guy to clog up the middle and be a force for the defense. Players like Pat Williams can turn pass rushers into beasts and make corners better.
A lot of teams will want Williams on their roster.
No. 5: Santana Moss
11 of 15
Santana Moss is someone that you might not think has been around that long, but he's in his 10th season as a pro.
It's clear he's not someone who can carry a unit as a wideout, but he can be a really good number two option in an offense, and that should make him appealing to a bunch of teams out there. It's really a matter if Moss will go for that after being a top option for years.
I think he can do that, and would do that in the right situation.
No. 4: Ronde Barber
12 of 15
Ronde Barber has been a stabilizing force for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for years, and the Bucs would love to have him back.
Barber is a veteran, leading presence on a team full of rookies. He wants to be back with the Bucs, and they want him back. It seems like a marriage that has to happen.
I think we'll see that happen at some point. He's really not looking to go anywhere else.
No. 3: Randy Moss
13 of 15
Randy Moss has had one of the worst seasons of his career, but I'm not sure that's all his fault.
Sure, it drove him out of New England and Minnesota, but in Tennessee, it was clear the Titans had no idea what they were doing with him. It was just a sad display.
Moss should catch on somewhere in the league next year. He's not washed up.
No. 2: Champ Bailey
14 of 15
Champ Bailey is one of, if not the greatest, cornerbacks of his generation, and he's a free agent after this year.
He doesn't know if he's going to be back in Denver after this year, and with Bailey's knowledge and his skills, you know teams are going to want to bring him in, and it's a smart move. He can groom your young corners and have them playing better football.
I think the market will be pretty hot for Bailey.
No. 1: Terrell Owens
15 of 15
Okay, I know he's a handful, but numbers don't lie.
Yes, Terrell Owens is coming off knee injury, and it's at an advanced stage of his career, but he proved this year that he can get it done at the highest level. He had a monster year, and he won't be back with the Bengals.
I think some team will take a chance on him and after last year, there's no reason not to unless you're worried about him stirring the pot.
