Roger Federer Cools Andy Murray...But For How Long?
Andy, Andy, Andy.
Only Mr. Murray could have ended a week of highs in such anti-climatic fashion.
The soon to be world number four stormed his way into the US Open final with the best tennis of his career but in true Andy Murray style, was found wanting.
That is in no way a dig at Britain's number one, who just a few short months ago would have fallen away a lot earlier than that.
In truth, the 21-year-old Scotsman had a terrific tournament and announced himself on the world and Grand Slam stage. He'd never been beyond a Grand Slam quarter when he walked out to face Rafael Nadal in this years semi-final.
Not many gave him a hope and in all honesty he'd never had a hope against the World Number 1, in their previous five meetings.
Nothing is forever as they say and Murray took the best player in the world to the cleaners.
"Spell Binding" was the quote I liked best to describe the Scot's performance. Not even a whole day's delay could stop the temperamental Murray from winning by three sets to one.
A definate stumbling block in Murray's earlier career. Rain delays, bad calls, fitness, all used to get to him but not now, not against the world's best.
Certainly not now that he can be classed amongst the best with out any question.
The English press used the word "fluke" and that certainly irritated many. Especially as tennis experts the world over rose to their feet to salute Tennis's newest great.
One simply doesn't fluke their way to a Grand Slam final. Especially not past the best in the world. Although one could argue it was in fact the best in the world that ended his Murray's dreams in the final.
Roger Federer was back to his very best as he beat Murray 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 and he's another man who's had the pleasure of silencing the doubters.
This is about Murray though and he'll be gutted by his performance in the final, which looks a lot worse on paper than it did on court.
The fact is, Murray has slipped up in the final but that's a long way from slipping up in round three or four.
Andy Murray will be back next year, wowing the Flushing Meadow's crowd and who's to say it won't be his name, next to Roger Federer's, on that shiny trophy?
All that's left to say is well done Andy. You've done us all proud.
