Toronto Maple Leafs: What Sparked Mikhail Grabovski's 6-Game Scoring Streak?

Patrick YaghoobiansDec 29, 2010

Mikhail Grabovski is without a doubt the best Maple Leaf right now. Including the club's most recent game against the Carolina Hurricanes, Mikhail Grabovski has scored a point in his past six games with a total of seven points. Of his seven points, five are goals and the two are assists.

When former Lwafs GM Cliff Fletcher traded for Grabovski, Leafs fans did not know what they should make of this guy. Was he going to be an elite force on the team after only tallying nine points in 26 games with the Canadiens

In his first season as a Leaf, Grabovski overachieved. He scored 48 points in 78 games, and played exceptionally well. In his second season, his play dropped big time. He was not making smart decisions and it did not look like he wanted to play hockey, although he did score 35 points during the season.

Entering this season, Grabovski has scored 27 points in 35 games and is on pace to score 61 points by the end of the season. Not to mention, Cliff traded a fifth-round pick for Grabo

Heading into the season, Grabovski was being given a hard time from the media whether or not he was capable of being the No. 2 center on the team. He struggled in the early goings of the season, but as of late, he has been on a tear. Not only did he prove that he had the skill set to be a top six forward and a second-line center, but he is currently centering the first line of the team. Tyler Bozak has been struggling, mostly because of the big role he was given, and because of that, Grabovski was given a chance to take the top spot. He currently has 13 goals and 14 assists.

The main reason that Grabovski has been on fire is mostly because of his teammates. His current wingers are Clarke MacArthur, and Nikolai Kulemin, who have been playing wonderful hockey as of late. MacArthur, who was probably the biggest steal of the offseason, has scored nine goals, and has tallied 18 assists for a grand total of 27 points, which currently leads the team along with Mikhail Grabovski.

Kulemin has also played exceptional hockey lately. He has scored 10 goals and added 12 assists for a total of 22 points. This gives the line a grand total of 32 goals and 44 assists for 76 points. They have been without a doubt the Maple Leafs' best line, and this is the main reason for Grabovski's success.

If Grabovski can keep up his good work, he can be in contention for the Most Improved Player of the Year, especially after last season, where he did not produce what was expected of him.

Safe to say, the spectacular play of him and his linemates is the reason that he is on his current six-game point streak.

Thank you for reading and have a happy New Year!
