Leyritz Manslaughter: Where Was Fredia Ann Veitch's Seatbelt?

Johnny BlandDec 30, 2007

This was the matchup:

Jim Leyritz in something like that white monster at left against his acquaintance, Fredia Ann Veitch, in something like that black behemoth below.

So how did Leyritz knock her out of the park like a Mark Wohlers fastball?

His 2006 Ford Expedition may have had automatic transmission, but Jimmy Leyritz is a clutch hitter.

By all accounts, Leyritz had only consumed a "normal" number of vodka-tonics for somebody celebrating that magical milestone in life, the 44th birthday.

Okay, Leyritz ran a stale red light at full speed—but why should he have expected that there'd be traffic in Ft. Lauderdale's entertainment district shortly after the bars' closing time?

Once again we see that drunk driving continues despite all the low-budget public address commercials. Even a revered World Series hero, a guy who eschewed steroids for simple HGH and amphetamines, a guy who held down a gig at ESPN (dot-com) for a whole year...will sometimes make this mistake.

But it's nearly 2008, y'all. Isn't it time  we all wear our seatbelts when we're out in the wee hours of the morning?

If Veitch had buckled up, she would have collected a sweet insurance payment, gotten some badass prescription painkillers for neck discomfort, and lived.

If you're going to drive around solo in a gigantic carbon-emitter like the Mitsubishi Montero, your reason better be safety. Not wearing your seatbelt in one of those beasts is like an OCD freak bathing in horseshit.
