NFL Rumors: Top 10 Candidates Who Could Replace Mike Singletary
San Francisco 49ers are somehow still in it in the NFC West but no matter what happens from here on out, Mike Singletary is going to be fired.
Singletary isn't a good coach before a game and once the game starts he isn't much better. It's time to start thinking about who could replace Singletary and here are 10 candidates that could replace him. Do you agree or disagree? Are there any people not on the list that you'd like? Make sure to let it be known.
No. 10: Jeff Fisher
1 of 10
Jeff Fisher is a coach that could be on the market after the year that has San Francisco ties.
Fisher is locked in a war with quarterback Vince Young and it seems like Bud Adams, the Titans' owner, has sided with Young. The longest tenured head coach in football could be the odd man out and on the hunt for a new job.
He coached in San Francisco before and could land there after possibly leaving Tennessee.
No. 9: Perry Fewell
2 of 10
Perry Fewell is a defensive guru that also has some head coaching experience.
Fewell is the defensive coordinator of the Giants and if you get that gig, you know you've done something right on the defensive end of the football. He also served as an interim head coach after Dick Jauron was fired as coach of the Buffalo Bills.
He led the Bills to a 3-4 finish and could get some attention from teams this offseason.
No. 8: Ron Rivera
3 of 10
Ron Rivera is the defensive mastermind behind the San Diego defense that has dominated opposing offenses this year.
The Chargers have one of the best defenses in football and he's done it without a lot of high profile talent. This isn't a team like Baltimore or the Jets that have a lot of name recognition. San Diego's scheme has helped it immensely and that's due to Rivera.
He's someone who will be in play, but with the 49ers needing offense, I'm not sure he'll be at the top of the list.
No. 7: Russ Grimm
4 of 10
Any time you get close to becoming the coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, you know you're doing something right.
Grimm is the Arizona Cardinals assistant head coach and lost out to Mike Tomlin to become the next Pittsburgh coach after Bill Cowher left. He worked under Cowher and knows the formula for success and got back to the Super Bowl with former Steelers assistant Ken Whisenhunt in Arizona.
He's going to be in the discussion for a lot of jobs and should be one of the guys San Francisco brings in.
No. 6: Gary Kubiak
5 of 10
Now Gary Kubiak is on the hot seat in Houston and with another losing season, there's a good chance he might get fired.
A natural fit for Kubiak would be Denver, where the Broncos will be looking to find a replacement after the season. However, I'm sure he'll test the market and San Francisco could use an offensive mind like his to turn the team around.
Just don't let him touch the defense.
No. 5: Rob Ryan
6 of 10
Speaking of defense, Rob Ryan is a guy that could get some looks around the league for head coaching jobs.
Ryan's the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns and he's always done a good job wherever he's been and with the success of his brother Rex in New York, you have to think that a team looking for an identity would love to have a guy like him.
I know I want him coaching my team.
No. 4: John Fox
7 of 10
John Fox is a coaching free agent this year and he's not going to be brought back by the Carolina Panthers.
Everyone agrees that he's a good coach but that his time in Carolina is clearly up. Fox is going to have a long list of people out there who want his services and the 49ers should bring him in for an interview. He took the Panthers to success and can do it in San Fran as well.
He just doesn't have the talent to compete in Carolina. That can change with the 49ers.
No. 3: Jim Harbaugh
8 of 10
Jim Harbaugh certainly wouldn't have to move far to become the head coach of the 49ers.
Harbaugh is currently coaching Stanford and is a highly regarded coach and looked at as someone who can make the leap to the next level. He's done wonders for the Cardinal and is the type of guy who can bring new life to a team.
I think he's a guy who will most likely be brought in to interview for the job, or at the very least be linked to the job.
No. 2: Brian Billick
9 of 10
It's been a long time since Brian Billick has been on the sidelines for an NFL team and I think that could change sooner rather than later.
Billick could be a good fit for the Ravens. He was originally an offensive mind and even though he struggled in that department with Baltimore, he was able to win football games for the Ravens. He's a good coach and will get a job somewhere at some point.
The 49ers aren't a bad team, an established coach can push them over the top.
No. 1: Jon Gruden
10 of 10
Jon Gruden is a name that will be talked about with every head coach opening in the league and it's time to break it down here.
Gruden is an offensive coach and San Francisco desperately needs that after the past couple of years where the offense was almost non-existent. He'll bring an attitude and a fire to the job and the team and energize the team and the fanbase.
He'll be a great hire somewhere, and the 49ers would be a good fit.
