Will Manny Pacquiao Be the First To Knock Out Shane Mosley on May 7th?

King JDec 22, 2010

Manny Pacquiao, the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world, is pretty much loved by almost everyone in America a recent poll from ESPN Sports Nation implies; however, many fight fans were not taking too kindly to the news that Shane Mosley would indeed be the next to face Pac Man.

For those of you who have been in a coma for about the last three years or so, the world's number one choice for Manny Pacquiao to fight next is obviously fellow undefeated, top pound-for-pound fighter, Floyd Mayweather Jr.

According to the ESPN Sports Nation poll, Juan Manuel Marquez would be the most desirable fight for the fans to see next after Mayweather.

When word got out that Shane Mosley had agreed to all of Bob Arum's terms and that the fight was a go for May 7th at the MGM Grand many fans took to the internet via fight fan forums and Twitter to express their strong disapproval for the fight.

I, for one, am with the majority. After Mayweather, Marquez is the only other fight that the world wants to see. Yet at the same time I am honest enough to say that come May 7th after some clever promoting and of course the ever powerful yet often times misleading HBO 24/7 this fight will do huge numbers both in ticket and pay per view sales at the end of the day.

Many critics of Pacquiao have been saying that all he does is fight Mayweather's left overs. Meaning, he fights opponents that Mayweather has already fought and defeated. This is a true statement, however, Manny is beating these same opponents more impressively than Mayweather did.

For those of you who need help here's a quick recap:

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Oscar De La Hoya : Mayweather Split Decision

Manny Pacquiao vs Oscar De La Hoya: Pacquiao eighth Round TKO

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Ricky Hatton: Mayweather TKO 10

Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton: Pacquiao KO second round

Some may argue that Mayweather utterly dominated and put a boxing clinic on the common opponent Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny struggled to a draw and a controversial split decision. This is true and that is why a third and final fight with Marquez would make the most sense right now.

Back to Manny fighting Mayweather's left overs, we will now see how he fares against the most recent left over of Mayweather in Shane Mosley.

In their super-mega fight everyone was on his or her feet, shocked that Mosley was able to land such a big clean power shot to the face of Mayweather causing his knees to buckle and forcing him to hold on for life.

However, just like any other Mayweather fight, Floyd did what he knows how to do best and that is figure you out and break you down for the remainder, the rest of that fight was a shut out.

Despite Floyd winning every single round with ease from about round three on, he, just like all 49 of Mosley's opponents, was not able to knock Sugar Shane out.

Mosley's never been stopped, the closest he ever came was from the hands of the much taller, longer, larger fighter Vernon Forrest who had him in the most trouble in his whole career.

At this point of Mosley's career he is nowhere near where he was at his prime. It is evident from his performances in the second half of the Mayweather fight and his most recent snoozefest with Sergio Mora.

Does Mosley have a chance in his fight to upset Pacquiao? Yes, of course, he still is dangerous for the first couple of rounds. However if Pacquiao takes his training camp seriously or even remotely seriously he should have no problem. Anyone from his team would tell you that even a 80 percent Pacquiao is still about double the average fighter.

The bigger question is will Manny be able to do what no other fighter was ever able to do and stop and knock out the Sugar Man? If Manny is able to knock out Mosley he will have some major bragging rights added to his already unheard of resume.

If Manny defeats Mosley by a one sided decision many will most likely criticize him for taking on Mosley too late in his career and the win will not mean much; they are already saying this right now.

So fight fans can Manny be the first to knock out Mosley?
