5 Insane Nadal Facts 🤯

Andy Murray Does the Unthinkable and Beats 'The Matador'

Yoosof FarahSep 7, 2008

Andy Murray has tonight booked a meeting with Roger Federer in the final of the US Open after overcoming Rafael Nadal in a thrilling four-set encounter at Flushing Meadows.

The Scot has gone further than he's ever gone before by beating Rafael Nadal in a spectacular four-set match that was delayed by rain.

Nadal, the current Roland Garros and Wimbledon champion, was two sets down before the rain delay. He fought back by taking the third set, but could not dig down as deep as Murray, who battled his way to an amazing fourth-set victory to take the match.

This incredible result is another step forward for the young Scot, who has gone from strength-to-strength following a successful Wimbledon campaign and a Cincinnati Masters title.

Tonight's result will now set up a very interesting match between Murray and Roger Federer, the current US Open champion.

Federer will be out to save his season with a victory tomorrow, as he has failed to win a Grand Slam this season. The only big achievement he has to show for his season is an Olympic doubles' gold medal, when he won the gold with Stanislas Wawrinka in Beijing.

Murray, on the other hand, will be out to make his season. Having reached a career-best quarter-final finish at Wimbledon (which at that point was his highest finish in any Grand Slam), the Scot topped that with a fantastic victory over Novak Djokovic in the final of the Cincinnati Masters.

Now, having already experienced title success in the U.S with the Masters series, Murray will look to show that he is ready to break into the top three with a win over Federer.

It is something that is not impossible now, having reached his first ever Grand Slam final and coming further than he's ever been before, doing the unthinkable by beating Rafael Nadal along the way.

Such experience beating World No. 1s has not just happened once; Murray beat Federer when the Swiss was world No. 1. It's an experience that will put him in good stead for tomorrow's game.

It has been a great tournament for Murray, and British tennis as a whole. Following the  disappointments of Greg Rusedski and Tim Henman, both of whom have never won a Grand Slam despite coming so perilously close, the big question is: Can Murray finally give British tennis fans the success they've been longing for?

For Andrew Murray and tennis as a whole, let's hope so. Let's hope he can go out there and win it, and cure the heartache that is British tennis.
