NHL Rumors: 10 Destinations for Brian Rolston

Donald WoodDec 20, 2010

Brian Rolston is a versatile forward who can play all three positions.  He has used his versatility to make it in the NHL as long as he has.

Rolston is an elite two way forward who is feels at home in the defensive zone and has maintained a high level of defensive play even as his point production has plummeted.

The New Jersey Devils waived the veteran last Tuesday to try to save salary, but he cleared waivers and still remains with the team.

These are 10 places where he could end up.  For the most part, they’re just educated guesses to where he may land.

Enjoy!

New York Rangers

Rolston would fit in with the young forwards of the Rangers like Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky.  He may be able to teach them a few tricks he has up his sleeves defensively.

The Rangers could use the depth at forward as well.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers need all the help they can get.  The team is super young and a quality, experienced forward would be great.

Rolston would be a third-line player and would protect the young stars of the Oilers from their defensive blunders.

New York Islanders

The Islanders have been struggling mightily and a strong defensive presence could turn the franchise around.

The whole team could buy into the way he plays and the whole mindset of the franchise could shift to a defensive method with his arrival.

Anaheim needs another aging forward like a hole in the head but hear me out.

Rolston would add needed depth and versatility to the forward positions and could alleviate some needed minutes off of the big three: Corey Perry, Bobby Ryan and Ryan Getzlaf.

Phoenix Coyotes

NEWARK, NJ - DECEMBER 15: Lee Stempniak #22 of the Phoenix Coyotes is covered by Brian Rolston #12 of the New Jersey Devils during the first period of a hockey game at the Prudential Center on December 15, 2010 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Paul Bere

The Coyotes are a defensive minded team that would welcome Rolston with open arms.  He plays there style of hockey and doesn’t mind getting dirty in the corners.

The added depth at forward would help keep them in a tight Western Conference race.

Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars are in the heat of a lot of the trade talks.  It’s mostly over Brad Richards and there have been rumors of a big deal with New Jersey.

I don’t know how reliable the rumor is but it’s a thought that Rolston could be dealt to alleviate the cap stress.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes are still very much in the hunt for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and a player like Rolston would be good for the team.

To make it to the playoffs and go deep into them, you need to play solid defensive hockey.

That’s what Rolston brings to a team.

St. Louis Blues

Injuries, Injuries and more injuries.

The Blues have been plagued with terrible injuries this season and Rolston might be the plug to stop the bleeding.

The team could play him on any line, at any position to try to shut down the other team.  With all of the injuries, the Blues need to do something to try to contend.

Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets had three scouts at the last Devils game.  Draw your conclusions as you wish.

I think he would fit great on the Blue Jackets.  Rolston’s versatility would let him fit in every situation and his defensive prowess would be a welcomed addition.

Minnesota Wild

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - DECEMBER 3: Brian Rafalski #28 of the New Jersey Devils vies for position with Brian Rolston #12 of the Minnesota Wild in the crease in front of goaltender Martin Brodeur #30 of the New Jersey Devils during their NHL game at Contine

Maybe heading back to Minnesota would be the best for him and the franchise.

The Wild have seemed to get away from the defense first mentality and the return of Rolston could see the return of the real Wild mindset.
