Donovan McNabb Benched: Odds On Where He Will Play Next Year

Adam WellsDec 17, 2010

With each passing day it's becoming more and more clear that Donovan McNabb will not be in Washington after this NFL season is over. He might not even make it that long.

This season in Washington has not gone as anyone has expected. McNabb hasn't been performing at a high level this year. The Redskins appear to be a disaster between this McNabb situation and the Albert Haynesworth debacle.

Now comes word that McNabb will not be starting this Sunday's game against Dallas. That's right the Redskins believe in Rex Grossman more then they believe in Donovan McNabb.

That contract that Washington gave McNabb earlier this year was all just window dressing. Clearly they have no intention of bringing Donovan back and this is probably the final straw in this camel's back.

Donovan is 34 years old and will be looking for his third team in three years. So who is going to go after him?

There are a number of teams that need quarterback help and will at least give Donovan a call. Here are the top 15 teams that could sign McNabb next season.

15. New York Jets

Odds: 300/1

Rex Ryan has talked about benching Mark Sanchez in the last couple weeks. Sanchez has really struggled at times this season and the Jets have high expectations for their team. If Donovan McNabb wants to be a backup, he could go to a good situation in New York.

There are a number of situations that would hold up McNabb from going to New York in 2011. But if they call, why wouldn’t he at least give them a chance because the team that would be around him would be as good as any that he will get an offer from.

It’s highly unlikely, but anything could happen in the next few months, especially if Sanchez falters the rest of this season.

14. Detroit Lions

Odds: 200/1

Matthew Stafford is the Lions quarterback when he is healthy. However, he hasn’t shown the ability to stay healthy over the course of a whole season. If the Lions want to get a quality insurance policy in the event that Stafford does get hurt, Donovan McNabb could be their man.

Shaun Hill is the backup quarterback right now and has performed pretty well in his time but he has limitations. He has one of the worst throwing arms in the NFL.

McNabb would be a big upgrade for them.

13. Seattle Seahawks

Odds: 125/1

For all the problems that Donovan McNabb has had in Washington this year, Matt Hasselbeck has not been setting the world on fire in Seattle. He has a rating of 75.2 and only 12 touchdowns to 15 interceptions.

Pete Carroll might want to make a move at the quarterback spot to give Seattle a better chance next year.

It could be a good situation for McNabb to go to because they run the west coast offense in Seattle and that’s McNabb’s specialty. It’s only a question of whether Seattle can bring itself to cut ties with Hasselbeck.

Odds: 125/1

Denver is in a bad situation right now and they need help. Kyle Orton has been strong at times this year and Tim Tebow as his backup. However, they will have a new regime in charge that might view both of them as incapable of leading an NFL team.

If Orton or Tebow is moved, Donovan McNabb could get a call to be the backup for this team. There is a chance they could start him if they signed him but it’d be more likely he would have to serve as the backup.

11. Jacksonville Jaguars

Odds: 75/1

Jacksonville has a solid team already in place, led by running back Maurice Jones-Drew. Quarterback David Garrard has put up solid numbers but he doesn’t really elicit fear in other team’s defenses. If they think that they have gone as far as they can with Garrard they could look in a new direction.

Donovan McNabb can be really strong in a place like Jacksonville because they have a lot of other pieces around him that could make him better.

10. Oakland Raiders

Odds: 35/1

Al Davis loves quarterbacks that have big arms. He wants to be able to throw the ball down the field, no matter what anyone else in the organization wants to do. They acquired Jason Campbell to be that guy and he hasn’t worked out like they would like to see.

It makes some sense for Oakland to look at Donovan McNabb because they have a defense that is good enough to win right now. Plus, their running back situation really improved this year. A quarterback is the next thing that they need to get.

9. Tennessee Titans

Odds: 20/1

Tennessee had high expectations this year and they started out strong, posting a 5-2 record. They have lost six straight games since that point and their franchise quarterback, Vince Young, wants out.

Jeff Fisher isn’t going anywhere, nor should he, so Tennessee will look for another quarterback.

If the Titans view themselves as contenders going into next year they could look to McNabb as their quarterback in 2011.

8. Cincinnati Bengals

Odds: 18/1

Carson Palmer has as much talent as any quarterback in the NFL. However, he has never been the same since that knee injury in the playoff game against Pittsburgh in 2005.

The Bengals could cut the cord with Palmer and go in a new direction.

If the Bengals wanted Donovan McNabb they would have to get rid of Terrell Owens because McNabb isn’t playing on a team with Owens.

7. Carolina Panthers

Odds: 15/1

To say that things didn’t work out this year for Carolina would be an understatement. They have fallen off a cliff and still haven’t hit the ground yet. They will have the top pick in April’s draft and will take a quarterback.

Donovan McNabb could be brought in as a placeholder for a year or as a backup to mentor the young player.

It’s a matter of whether McNabb wants to do that or not.

6. Miami Dolphins

Odds: 11/1

The Chad Henne experiment did not work out like anyone in Miami would have hoped. He has regressed from last year and they may not view him as a long-term quarterback solution.

The Dolphins do have Brandon Marshall at the receiver position to help a quarterback succeed. Donovan isn’t the kind of guy that will carry a team, but if you give him some weapons he can still be effective.

5. Cleveland Browns

Odds: 10/1

The Browns aren’t that far away from being respectable. They are 5-8 this season and have found a franchise running back, Peyton Hillis, and their defense isn’t awful.

The problem they have is at the quarterback position.

The Browns do like Colt McCoy but he hasn’t shown an ability to stay healthy. If they think he is too fragile they should give Donovan McNabb a call. They could make a run next season with an established quarterback.

4. Buffalo Bills

Odds: 8/1

The Buffalo Bills used to be one of the proudest franchises in all of sports. They have fallen on hard times lately and need to change things up. They do have some good weapons at their disposal, like rookie running back CJ Spiller.

Donovan McNabb could be a very nice stop gap player for them, while bringing them some success in the interim. Buffalo will likely try to draft a quarterback but if they don’t want to throw the rookie into the fire right away they could sign McNabb for a year to start.

3. Arizona Cardinals

Odds: 5/1

Arizona’s quarterback situation might be the direst situation in the NFL. The retirement of Kurt Warner left the team with a Grand Canyon sized hole at the position and they need to get it fixed. It remains to be seen what direction the Cardinals will want to go after the season.

They could view themselves as a decent quarterback away from contention, which in that division is probably true. Larry Fitzgerald is great but he can’t do much if no one can get him the ball.

2. San Francisco 49ers

Odds: 3/1

If Mike Singletary is back next season, I think that San Francisco will be the favorite to get Donovan McNabb because it will be his last chance to prove himself as their head coach.

San Francisco is in desperate need of a quarterback and for them to be successful next year McNabb could be their best chance.

It’s just a matter of whether the ownership of the 49ers will want to pony up the dough. They have a history of not wanting to pay players, though they are getting better with the extensions of linebacker Patrick Willis and tight end Vernon Davis.

1. Minnesota Vikings

15 of 15

Odds: 2/1

Last year the Vikings were looking at Donovan McNabb before he was dealt to Washington. They will have another quarterback situation after this season because Brett Favre is (hopefully) retiring and Tarvaris Jackson isn’t an NFL quarterback.

They believe that they can contend next year and need a quarterback that could at least manage a game without killing them. Plus, McNabb was successful in Philadelphia when he had good weapons around him.

Minnesota has a lot of weapons on offense that have been lost because of Favre’s issues this year, so McNabb could be really good for them.
