Tony Romo: Is It Time for the Dallas Cowboys To Draft a New Quarterback?

Chris EggemeyerDec 17, 2010

The hot headline of the day is in: Tony Romo has announced his engagement to sister of Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford, Candice Crawford.

Funny that the headlines surrounding Tony Romo have nothing to do with his recovery or his desire to come back to the playing field.

This begs the question, where do Tony Romo's priorities lie?

When he first went down and Dallas went into a panic, most people were ready to write off the Cowboys and start looking towards the future. However, with a new head coach and the surprisingly good services of Jon Kitna, Dallas has salvaged some dignity, and proved that they can move on without Romo.

While this is all happening, Romo has been completely mum. The Cowboys did not place Romo on IR, which means that they did intend to bring him back, but is it really a smart decision?

Tony Romo made his first headline in weeks with his engagement today. It has nothing to do with whether or not he will play on Sunday, or whether he plans on coming back at all this season.

So, then, is now about the time that the Cowboys draft their quarterback of the future?

With their current record, they will be unable to make a play on one of the big three quarterbacks (Andrew Luck, Ryan Mallett and Jake Locker), but there is plenty of potential sleeper talent in this draft that could end up being a good choice for the Cowboys.

First off, we have Christian Ponder.

While his draft stock may have fallen a good amount, Ponder is still a viable option, as he has a history of success, and he has been a part of a very successful Florida State team this year.

A second option could be Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.

While he may also end up going away before the Cowboys come up in the draft, he has a big upside, and could likely step in on the first day with the added benefit of adding a new dimension to a Cowboys offense that seems to have lost its spark.

And a third option, which is a bit of a shot out of left field, would be to hold on to Jon Kitna as the starter for next year, and take a look at a guy like Dan Persa out of Northwestern, or Terrelle Pryor out of Ohio State next year.

In any case, it seems like it might finally be time for the Cowboys to part ways with their bad luck charm and start afresh with a new coach, a new quarterback, and a new look.
