Washington Redskins Embarrassing Season Continues With Extra Point Blunder

Brandon GalvinDec 12, 2010

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder thought he found the savior of his franchise when he hired Mike Shanahan in the offseason.

Shanahan has failed thus far to turn around dysfunctional and tumultuous franchise. They traded for a winning quarterback in Donovan McNabb, something the team has been missing for years.

He has failed to live up to the hype and was even given a contract extension, despite being benched by Shanahan against the Detroit Lions in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.

It was determined by Shanahan that quarterback Rex Grossman gave the ‘Skins a better chance to win in the two-minute drill than McNabb, who just may have more comeback wins than the amount of wins on Grossman’s record.

Interesting decision.

Shanahan managed to turn Albert Haynesworth, one of the most feared defensive tackles in the game, into a useless soul who ended becoming a nuisance for Shanahan and ultimately suspended.

The team still started the season off fairly well, heading into their Week 9 bye with a 4-4 record.

Since then, the defense has completely fallen apart. They were lit up against Michael Vick’s Eagles for 59 points.

Last week against the New York Giants, Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw gutted the defense for 200 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

The offense hasn’t been any better.

They lost three of their past four games heading into their Week 14 home stand against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Ryan Torain returned from a hamstring injury for Washington and reestablished the Redskins rushing attack, which had been completely lost in recent weeks.

Torain powered through the Buccaneers for over 150 yards in the first half. The ‘Skins were leading 10-6 at half time and were in position to take a much needed game to get their season back on track.

Josh Freeman, the new “Comeback Kid” in the NFL, proceeded to lead his “Young Bucs” to three scoring drives in the second half to take a 17-10 lead.

Once again, the Redskins defense was letting the team down.

Donovan McNabb finally lived up to his reputation in the waning moments of the game. He marched the Redskins down the field to the Tampa Bay two-yard line. After Torain lost yardage, it came down to fourth and goal with the game on the line.

With just nine seconds left from the six-yard line, McNabb found Santana Moss over the middle of the field for the touchdown.

As the Redskins were about to kick the extra point to tie the game, the snap flew high above the holders head and down the field, costing the Redskins the chance to tie and potentially win the game.

This is just another reason why nothing can be expected or implied in the game of football. This is why they play every aspect of the game.

This extra point blunder is just another item on the laundry list of embarrassing mishaps that have happened for Mike Shanahan’s Washington Redskins.
