Liverpool Transfers Latest: 5 Players on Roy Hodgson's Hitlist

Maxx GDec 8, 2010

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson seems to ride a road of ups and downs at the moment. Wins and losses, Losses and wins. A lack of definite consistency and the absence of a true Liverpool style soccer is what we are missing for a long time.

The new owners NESV are definitely chasing the dreams of a top 4 finish for the club to enter the Champion's League race next season and are hopeful of bringing in some talents to the team to strengthen the present squad.

What remains to be seen though is Roy Hodgson's transfer tactics and decisions, as his transfers like Christian Poulsen have turned up to be a complete tragedy. I think even Hodgson can play better than Poulsen.

While a large number of names have ben linked with Anfield, it is of no doubt that this is going to be a busy January for the club and Hodgson. Supporting Hodgson will be the newly appointed director Damien Comolli who can turn the fortunes of the Reds this time.

Here I present the 5 latest names on the transfer wishlist of Liverpool.

While you may put up some other options too, you are most welcome to do so since the list is not an exhaustive one. The players mentioned here are linked with moves to Liverpool and besides them there are some other names too like Charles N Zogbia or Zohan Elmander who could be moving to the Reds ground this transfer window.

Rod Fanni: The French Connection

1 of 5

The love for defense in a Roy Hodgson management just cannot be denied. While at Fulham, the core strength of Hodgson was also a deep lying solid defense governed by Brede Hangeland and fellow team mates. Coming to the modern day scenario, Liverpool has not yet been so strong defensively but they are showing signs of improvement.

While Jamie Carragher remains out of the team, Liverpool thinks of adding another strength to their squad by buying the French International right back Rod Fanni. Rod currently plays for Rennes in France and was previously also linked with moves to the EPL, relating to his interest to play in the league.

Liverpool's newly appointed director of football strategy, Damien Comolli, also has expressed his desire to sign this player and his French connections would come to lot of use in this case in signing of a worthy deal.

Rod can play both as a right back and a centre back and thus add much cover to the injury plagued defense of the Reds. He is in his 29 and though absolutely not young, he is tough and physical enough to adapt to the game.

Though Rennes will demand a price of around £4m for the bullish defender, but Liverpool will hopefully cut it to a £2.5-3m deal. That's cheap, and a justified gamble. Liverpool may face competition from Marseille for securing the bid, but it is said that Rod's love for English football may see him landing in the Reds' jersey finally.

Verdict: Buy the Player.

Jonas Gutierrez: Spider Man In Red Jersey?

Liverpool has Maxi Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt as the widemen of thesquad. Though Kuyt presents more of a hardworking and enthusiastic Red every time, Maxi has not been so impressive this far in Liverpool and plays more like an average player.

Jonas Gutierrez is the man that Liverpool may buy to add up their much needed wing strength. Basically, Jonas is a tough man with good runs and average dribbling skills, What make him a stand out is his physical prowess and speed which is much suited to the English football. Besides that, the ma is a hard-worker like Kuyt and can cover a much wider area over the field.

Jonas acquired his nickname Spider Man after he celebrated a goal in Real Mallorca wearing a spider man mask.

Playing currently for Newcastle United, the 6ft tall winger was also a choice of Coach Diego Maradona in the Argentina squad in World Cup 2010. And Lionel Messi feels, that Jonas is one of the best players undoubtedly in EPL.

Some players are underrated though, and if you have seen Jonas Gutierrez and his runs on the field, then you will agree that they guy deserves a portion more of the limelight.

However, Guitierrez will not come so cheap and a £7-8m transfer bid can work the case.

Verdict: Liverpool can go for the Spider-Man!

Ashley Young: Hodgson's Army Needs a Sharp Weapon

Much similar to the Jonas Gutierrez effect, Ashley Young will also bring the sharpness and width in the team.

However, Young remains as a better talent than Gutierrez though, and hence can cost a price of about 15m to seal the deal.

Ashley Young at 25, can play both as a winger and a forward to the team. His priciest assets include his fast paced runs along the field, dribbling ability to bypass defenders, crossing supremacy to assist the ball to the scorers and also his good scoring ability.

Though Young was also wanted on the lists of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, still Comolli and Liverpool believes that they can cut across the competition to land Young at Anfield.

The ex Watford man can move this January itself and bring god hopes to Anfield, but for Aston Villa it will be the end to all hopes.

Verdict: A must must buy for the Reds.

Wow, now this is one of the most exciting transfer rumors and my favorite one in this list. Ronaldinho, the Brazilian superstar and Ac Milan man may find his way to Premier League soon. And who does not want to see the man in England?

The Brazilians though have not much success story in the EPL, but Ronaldinho's excellent technical ability and vision may earn him a fan favorite place in England.

The man may be past his prime, but he still means a lot with his deadly passing ability. He may dribble a more and slow the game, but he can still run past defenders and score. And is always a prominent name when it comes to set pieces.

With Fernando Torres playing as the front-man, Ronaldinho can be the second striker or the in-the-hole man. And he plays his best in that role.

Ronaldinho's Brazilian team mate Lucas Leiva is a big admirer of the star and has requested the Liverpool management to bring in the player in Anfield. Ronaldinho's career stands at 30 and his contract with Milan has reacghed a stalemate with no definite conclusions. So,will Liverpool make the audacious bid to bring in the Samba show to England?

Verdict: Not sure how much of a gamble will it be, but it will definitely be interesting to see the man playing for Liverpool.

Luis Suarez: Can NESV Make It Come True For Liverpool?

What Liverpool lacks most at the moment? A forward of course, to play when Torres plays and to play when Torres does not play.

The Ajax star  and Uruguay International Luis Suarez is said to have told his agent to sound out potential suitors over a move in January after the departure of Martin Jol from the Amsterdam Arena compounded his current misery.

Ajax have gone through a poor run of results of late and - with Suarez currently serving a seven-match ban for biting an opponent, a number of Europe's top clubs have been alerted to his potential availability in the January Transfer Window.

The 23-year-old is thought to be valued at around €27 million but with Ajax deep in the financial strain the Dutch club may have to settle for a significantly reduced sum.

According to Metro, Liverpool and Spurs are set to battle for his signature with Suarez preferring a move to Anfield.

Unarguably he will be one of the most exciting players to watch for, and it is time to see that can the new Liverpool owners chase their Champion's League dreams and sign in Suarez?

Verdict: The most precious buy he will be. And an alert to all the other clubs in EPL.
