Philadelphia Eagles 2011 Mock Draft: Stronger Trenches, More Defensive

David DanielsDec 4, 2010

The last thing Philadelphia Eagles fans want to think about right now is the 2011 NFL Draft.

They're currently one of the hottest teams in the NFL and are arguably led by the NFL MVP in Michael Vick.

Even though they are Super Bowl contenders, they still have a few weaknesses.

Here is an early Eagles 2011 seven round mock draft:

Round 1: Gabe Carimi (OT, Wisconsin)

1 of 9
TAMPA, FL - JANUARY 1: Lineman Gabe Carimi #68 of the Wisconsin Badgers sets to block against the Tennessee Volunteers in the 2008 Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium on January 1, 2008 in Tampa, Florida. The Volunteers won 21 - 17. (Photo by Al Mess

Who:

Carimi is a 6'8", 320 pound mammoth at the tackle position.  Some question whether he can protect a quarterback's blindside, but either way, he can single-handedly create running lanes in a defense.

Why:

The Eagles offensive line is the team's largest weakness and is the only thing holding their offense back.  Upgrading the offensive line could turn the Eagles offense into something prolific.

Round 2: Curtis Brown (CB, Texas)

2 of 9
AUSTIN, TX - NOVEMBER 07: Cornerback Curtis Brown #3 of the Texas Longhorns practices before a game against the UCF Knights on November 7, 2009 at Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas. Texas won 35-3. (Photo by Brian Bahr/Getty Ima

Who:

Brown is an extremely talented cornerback who could fall because of the high volume of cornerbacks to be selected in front of him in the draft.

Why:

Asante Samuel's future with the Eagles is questionable. Dimitri Patterson's is, well, just Dimitri Patterson, and depth is lacking at the position.  The Eagles must add legit talent at cornerback before it becomes a gaping hole.

Round 3: Kristopher O'Dowd (C, USC)

3 of 9

Who:

O'Dowd was a borderline first round prospect, but then he severely injured his knee.  The Eagles get a major steal after he falls to the third.

Why:

Again, the Eagles must upgrade their offensive line.  Jamal Jackson is good, but he's injured all too often and he's getting up there in age.

Round 4: Kelvin Sheppard (ILB, LSU)

4 of 9

Who:

Sheppard is a leader at the inside linebacker position that could shepherd the Eagles defense for years to come.  He would bring energy to an all ready blitz-happy Eagles defense.

Why:

Stewart Bradley isn't the same young, promising linebacker he was before he tore his ACL.  If the Eagles don't expect him to ever get back to that form, they'll try to replace him this offseason.

Round 4: Mark Herzlich (OLB, BC)

5 of 9
CHESTNUT HILL, MA - SEPTEMBER 04: Mark Herzlich #94, Damik Scafe #55 and Codi Boek #13 of the Boston College Eagles walk out to the field for the home opening game against the Weber State Wildcats on September 4, 2010 at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill,

Who:

Herzlich is the linebacker who puts eye black all over his face, and the warrior that survived cancer.  He could drop because of dipped production, but he probably still needs time to get back to 100 percent.

Why:

Ernie Sims is possibly the most hated man on the Eagles defense.  The outside linebacker position hasn't been strong for the Eagles in years and it could be upgraded easily.

Round 5: James Carpenter (G, Alabama)

6 of 9

Who:

Carpenter is an offensive tackle for the Alabama Crimson Tide, but he'll have to move over to guard in the pros.  He's another massive lineman at 6'5", 300, the type Andy Reid loves.

Why:

The upgrading of the Eagles offensive line continues at the guard position.  They could use all the help they can get.

Round 5: Mike Blanc (DT, Auburn)

7 of 9
AUBURN, AL - NOVEMBER 27: Mike Blanc #93 of the Auburn Tigers against the Alabama Crimson Tide at Jordan-Hare Stadium on November 27, 2009 in Auburn, Alabama. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Who:

Blanc is the Auburn defensive tackle not named Nick Farley.  At 6'4", about 300 pounds, he has loads of potential.

Why:

Brodrick Bunkley's contract is expiring and his future in Philadelphia is up in the air.  Even if Bunkley re-signs, the Eagles could use some depth.

Round 6: Chris Harris (CB, Kansas)

8 of 9
KANSAS CITY, MO - NOVEMBER 28: Cornerback Chris Harris #16 of the Kansas Jayhawks looks on during the game against the Missouri Tigers at Arrowhead Stadium on November 28, 2009 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

Who:

Harris is a cornerback with good size at 6' that could provide quality depth to a team.

Why:

The Eagles could use more depth at the cornerback position and even an upgrade to their nickel and dime packages.

Round 7: Phillip Livas (RS, Louisiana Tech)

9 of 9

Who:

Phillip Livas is one of the best return men in college football.  He will be strictly a return ace in the NFL.

Why:

Ellis Hobbs may retire after this season.  Livas would be a nice replacement and could free up DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin to focus on offense.
