Triple H Needs To Return to WWE Sooner Rather Than Later

Bridget CampbellNov 30, 2010

Triple H has been out of action and off television since Extreme Rules (4/25/2010). He was first out for several nagging injuries, including an injury to his quadriceps, and then his return was delayed due to a torn bicep. It is unlikely he will return before the end of the year. This is already causing problems for the WWE and may continue to cause problems even after he has returned.

Let’s start with the problem his absence is causing right now. With the retirements of Shawn Michaels and Batista, the injuries of Undertaker and CM Punk, Mysterio only being able to work a limited schedule due to an inner ear infection and the recent “firing” of John Cena, the WWE is lacking star power on a regular basis. Although this causes young talent to get a push, this hurts the viewership from the older crowd wanting to tune in every week to someone they are used to seeing on their T.V.

This has also hurt the PPV buyrate. A parent/older fan is more likely to buy a PPV if they know one of the wrestlers being featured. The next PPV Triple H is rumored to be at is the Royal Rumble in January.

When the Royal Rumble rolls around next year, who knows who will be WWE Champion or World Heavyweight Champion? As it stands now, the Miz is WWE Champ while Kane is World Heavyweight Champ. If Triple H returns at the Rumble as planned, it should be expected that he will win and go on to WrestleMania for a title shot.

Looking back at the past few years, when superstars have returned from injury at the Royal Rumble (John Cena in 2008 and Edge in 2010) they were surprise entrants and ended up winning. Don’t be “surprised” if Triple H does the same.

What’s wrong with this idea? Well, the WWE Universe believes that Triple H has been out due to an injury suffered at the hands of Sheamus. Since the WWE is all about storylines (and boy do they love to drag them out) this means that story will have to play out on T.V. Can the WWE writers finish this story before WrestleMania arrives? Probably not.

With the Undertaker unsure if he will be available to wrestle at the big event, do we really want to see Triple H vs. Sheamus two years in a row at WrestleMania? Whether it is for the WWE title or not, the match is a repeat. Repeats should only happen at WrestleMania in which the first match was spectacular (like in the case of Shawn Michaels vs. the Undertaker).

What if he comes back and they ignore the previous feud with Sheamus? That would be an even bigger mistake. Triple H is the Cerebral Assassin, the King of Kings. Would the writers honestly expect the WWE Universe to believe that Triple H forgives Sheamus, or even worse, is afraid of Sheamus? Not a good idea.

If this happens, I have to ask myself what was the point of Triple H "going out" like that. What was the point of all of the references to Sheamus putting Triple H on the sidelines whenever the opportunity presented itself? There would be no point.

The only plus so far is that WWE has pushed new and young talent. But will that be a benefit in the years to come. Pushing young talent is always a hard decision. The thought in the back of your mind is always “Are they ready?” and the thought persists until they prove you otherwise.

The WWE has had some retirements in the past year and it's obvious that more retirements are just around the corner. Jack Swagger became World Heavyweight Champion a few short days after Shawn Michaels' retirement. His only title before this was the ECW Title. When he lost the World Heavyweight Title, he started to fall off the main event scene and it seems he is back to square one.

The Nexus has burst onto the scene and has been making an impact since day one. Although you could argue that Wade Barrett is the only member getting a push (he definitely has the tools to be a main eventer) he had no experience at even the mid-card level before being thrust into the main event.

The most recent push was for the Miz. After wining the Money in the Bank briefcase, he was put into more matches with the main event crew and was flirting on getting a WWE title shot without the briefcase.

On the first Monday Night Raw after Survivor Series, Miz cashed in his money in the bank and beat Randy Orton for the WWE Title. Many people inside the WWE (including Triple H) were outraged at the decision, claiming he wasn’t ready for that step in his career. Only time will tell if Miz will be like Jack Swagger or if he will maintain the push like John Cena did.

If WWE keeps pushing talent too soon, their character will become unbelievable and people will think that they are undeserving of anything good that comes their way. That could spell trouble for the WWE when Edge, Kane, Undertaker and Triple H inevitably retire in the coming years.

Well, what could be different if he returns sooner? He doesn’t have to wrestle until he is healthy, but he can still make appearances and screw Sheamus out of wins. If he was on T.V. before the Royal Rumble, then he would not have to win the Rumble match and he could play out his storyline with Sheamus.

They can have a match at the Rumble with Triple H winning and then Triple H can eliminate Sheamus from the Rumble match. Then he and Sheamus can enter the Elimination Chamber title match and focus only on each other, and Triple H injures Sheamus in the match to pause the feud until after WrestleMania.

One of them can win the WWE title and have to face the winner of the Royal Rumble at WrestleMania to pause the feud until after WrestleMania. I am sure the writers can think of something so that we don’t have to watch Sheamus vs. Triple H at WrestleMania again.

What do you guys think? Is a return for Triple H at the Royal Rumble a good idea or do you agree that he should return sooner? Can Triple H’s return save some young talent from getting a push before they are ready and help the WWE, or is it already to late? Thanks for reading.
