Steve Johnson: Buffalo Bills WR Quickly Becoming Newest Media and Online Craze

Daniel WolfNov 30, 2010

In the past, NFL wide receivers like Terrell Owens, Joe Horn and Chad Ochocinco have taken the approach of making headlines by doing things after a play has ended on the football field, and now it is Stevie Johnson's turn.

The Buffalo Bills receiver, who was a seventh-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft out of Kentucky, has taken the NFL world by storm this year.

It was a revolving door of receivers after Owens left, with the Bills trying to find a complimentary receiver across from starter Lee Evans.

But wait, that might be what has happened.

Owens, who has been one of the most media-friendly players in the NFL in years, was in Buffalo in 2009.

As was Johnson.

Perhaps Johnson learned a few things from Owens when he was in Buffalo a year ago, and that could explain what Johnson is doing right now that is creating a TMZ-like frenzy in the media as of late.

Johnson broke out in Week 7 against the Baltimore Ravens when he caught eight passes for 158 yards and one touchdown.

Quickly getting the attention of both the coaches and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, Johnson became the hot hand and he was getting the ball thrown his way more and more as the weeks progressed.

He even caught 11 passes for 145 yards in Week 9 against the Chicago Bears.

Then it happened in Week 11, in a come-from-behind victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. Johnson not only caught eight passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns, but busted out his inner T.O. and lifted up his jersey to show a white T-shirt that had a message on it.

The shirt was an ode to The Joker and the 2008 film The Dark Knight when the message said, "Why So Serious?"

The famous quote by the late Oscar-winning actor Heath Ledger.

The move resulted in a boom online that has not been seen since T.O. and Ochocinco would try and out-do the other in touchdown celebrations that left NFL fans and readers alike searching for the highlight online.

Now just over a week later, the Internet and media is buzzing again with Johnson's post-game tweet on Twitter blaming a higher power for not letting him catch a game-winning touchdown pass in overtime which would have beat the Pittsburgh Steelers.

News channels everywhere were playing this story nonstop on Monday.

T.O.'s influence seems to be fully realized by Johnson now and it looks like the 6'2", 202-pound receiver will be the newest TMZ-like attraction for the online world and media moving forward.
