Toronto Maple Leafs: Looks Can Be Deceiving, But Things Do Look Bad

Eric WarrenNov 29, 2010

The Toronto Maple Leafs left the nation's capital Saturday night with nothing to show for their mini two-game road trip but a frustrated goal tender and a bruised ego.

To say that the Leafs haven't played their best hockey on the road so far this year would be more than a little understatement as they have only collected five of a possible 20 points while away from the 'Hanger' so far this season.

The biggest concern is the amount of time the team has collectively turned  the puck over.

Tomas Kaberle, despite his early consistency and solid play, seems to be back to his old ways and would rather give up the puck in his own zone than take a hit.

Mikhail Grabovski, despite his obviously above (his) average play so far this season, still has to learn to anticipate a little better when making a pass.

Francois Beauchemin and the rest of the team collectively for that matter need to learn that there is a time to take the man and a time to find the puck. If you know where the puck is, take the man, if you don't, find it.

There were at least four occasions during the game Saturday night that the Leafs were oblivious as to where the puck was around they're own net.

On the first Sens goal, by the time they found it, it was on Kovalev's stick with no one around him.

Still, a great many fans blame Ron Wilson for the play of the the Toronto Maple Leafs, but you can't coach dumb and the Leafs, right now, are collectively making dumb, hurried decisions that are costing them.

If you turn the puck over because you've been checked off of it, that's one thing—at least you're making them work for it. But when you pass it, make sure you know it's going to get where you want it.

Seems simple enough.

Things aren't looking good for the boys in blue, and while we shouldn't expect a contender this year and it is relatively early in the season still, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been the model of inconsistency.

Which, as we all know, can cause premature balding and heart problems among fans between the ages of 4 and 104.
