Kofi Kingston: Brightest Smackdown Star To Usual Jobber

RiZENov 27, 2010

Last year, Kofi Kingston began a surprising turn around. Kingston seemed to be sliding down the card after losing the U.S. Title to The Miz. He was on the receiving end of the pinfall at Bragging Rights. After Big Show turned on his time however.

Before that, Kingston had static with fellow RAW Teammate Cody Rhodes. Cody would attempt to cost John Cena the WWE Title in a match with Randy Orton. Kingston ran down with a chair and chased off Legacy.

Orton lost the match and the next night on RAW plotted revenge against Kingston. After Kingston had defeated Y2J in a singles match, Orton tossed him off the stage.  Later in the night, Kingston destroyed Orton's custom race car much to the anger of Orton.

Basically pouring gas on the fire. Orton and Kingston would continue to feud and at one point turned into a heated rivalry. During a RAW show in MSG, Orton attempted to punt HOF Roddy Piper in the head.

Kingston made the save and assaulted Orton through the crowd. Kingston proceeded to bust Orton open with a blunt object. Kingston followed it up with a boom drop through a table.

Much to my delight, I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. Kingston was definitely on a push. At Survivor Series 2009, Team Kofi beat Team Orton after Kingston pinned CM Punk and Orton.

Two former World Champions! Kingston looked as if he was finally ascending to the top. He had dropped the happy demeanor and Jamaican accent. Finally.

The Orton/Kofi feud continued with numerous singles matches were Orton finally defeated Kofi at TLC.  Things were finally going great for Kofi. I felt the long awaited winds of change blowing. But it was not meant to be.

During a triple threat number one contenders match, Kofi supposedly didn't go with the plan finished. Instead Orton ended the match with an RKO. Orton was said to be pissed off backstage and told officials Kofi wasn't ready to main event.

It seemingly worked. Kofi quietly slid back down the card despite participating in the Elimination Chamber that year.  After another unsuccessful attempt at winning the MITB Briefcase, Kingston was drafted to Smackdown!

Honestly, I had given up on the WWE ever pushing Kofi again. I know Orton's a top guy in the WWE but if the rumors were true and he did say those words shame on him. Shame on management for letting a Superstar decide someone else's fate.

Kingston debuted defeating Y2J. Nothing special, he had done beat em numerous times before.

When Drew McIntyre was suspended for his relentless attack on Matt Hardy, Teddy Long announced a tournament for the IC Title. Kingston advanced in the tournament and defeated Christian to win the title.

Quickly stripped afterwards by a returning McIntyre. I was appalled by managements actions. Drew was treated like a spoiled brat on t.v. and I strongly disliked him.

I kept my opinions to myself and hoped Kingston would quickly regain the title. That he did, Kingston bested McIntyre in a match at Over the Limit. Thank God.

Kingston was away from RAW and it's crammed up Roster. He was on the "better" wrestling show, Smackdown!

Kingston defeated Drew twice afterwards and defended Long against McIntyre's verbal attacks. After once AGAIN unsuccessfully winning the Smackdown! MITB Kingston entered a feud with Ziggler.

I felt that Ziggler was long overdue for a IC Title reign but not at the expense of Kofi. No way was Kingston losing to Ziggler. I reconsidered the possibility after observing the endings to Ziggler's last matches.

Vickie Guerrero.

Ziggler defeated Kofi in a non title match followed by a dq win over Kingston cementing his status as number one contender. The big story was what caused Kingston to be dq.

Kingston visually beat Ziggler after a slap from Vickie Guerrero. He beat Ziggler to the point where he couldn't even stand. The following week Ziggler defeated Kingston for the IC Title.

Because of Vickie Guerrero. Kingston beat Ziggler down again. This time more viciously. Afterward Kingston and Ziggler became involved in a series of matches were Dolph would get counted out or disqualified to retain.

Honestly, I was sick of seeing the same scenario over and over again. Even the Nexus interfered in one of the matches. Dolph defeated Kingston at Night of Champions thus ending their feud.

After that Kofi dropped down the card again. His push was over.

Lately Kingston had gotten back in the winning side of things by defeating Swagger to qualify for the KOTR. If you ask me, it's just another opportunity for Kingston to job.

Kingston's a very talented wrestler. Popular among WWE Fans and pretty solid on the mic. So arguments against a Main Event Push are out the window. One thing I've heard is Kofi's demeanor.

He's too nice. He can't be serious. Really? Really? Did you happen to see the beatdown Kofi laid upon Ziggler.  If not, be sure to watch and your whole opinion about Kingston may change.

Hell a heel turn wouldn't be out of the question for Kofi.

WWE Management has shafted numerous Superstars in the past few months. It seems like whenever Kofi starts to rise up the cards, Creative takes em down a couple of notches.

It's an unbelievable trend that should end immediately. Honestly, I had given up on Smackdown! after some of it's top stars were drafted. Kofi's feud with Drew brought my attention back to the real "A" Show.

Hopefully things change for Kingston. This time for an extended period of time. New Superstars just don't make themselves you know.
