The Miz As New WWE Champion: Pros and Cons That Affect WWE and Himself

nirreJ streboRNov 24, 2010

For most fans, The Miz becoming the new WWE Champion came as a surprise to us all (not counting the scowling girl). But from different fans comes different perspectives. What exactly will become of Miz's title reign? How will it benefit the WWE? Will the WWE affect it positively or negatively? In my opinion, this sort of goes both ways for the WWE.

Pros

1. We don't have to see the title go back and forth between Cena and Orton

For quite some time, the WWE has mostly focused on fan favorites John Cena and Randy Orton. They focused on them so much, in fact, that they neglected other Superstars in favor of the two. Of course, there would be monotony in those title reigns. This was beneficial because with Orton and Cena burying other wrestlers, some were afraid that title reigns would be only given to both of these guys, nobody else.

So, it's nice to see the WWE Championship with a fresh face. Miz is the new champion, the "Age of Orton" hath been averted, end of story. Someone told me that they would rather hear Michael Cole having an orgasm over the Miz's new title than having to see Cena or Orton with it.

2. The Miz shall generate much, much heat from his title run.

Seriously, did you see that girl?! Something tells me that is to become an internet meme. But, anyway—fan reactions to Miz have been greater than that of the likes of most of RAW's heels, but was slowly dying out when the focus centered on Barrett, Cena, and Orton. Imagine all the heat and attention he'll generate from this.

Immediately, when you hear his theme song sound off, you'll hear cascades of raucous booing. Makes your mouth water, doesn't it? The Miz was slowly receiving a smaller and smaller reaction from fans. Why?

Well, he wasn't doing much of anything on RAW for the past several weeks! We saw his match at HIAC, with Daniel Bryan and John Morrison carrying the majority of the match (which was randomly put together, in my opinion.), and then we saw his mid-carder bonanza at Bragging Rights, but most of the time, he was just walking to the ring with his briefcase... TALKING.

And that's what we saw most of the time, more exhibition of his mic skills than his wrestling skills. Now, with the WWE Championship, he can actually take that and use it to taunt the audience even further.

3. This would help the Miz out.

For Miz, this title reign would help to benefit his character. Uh, most of it was explained in #2, but as for the WWE, Miz merchandise purchases have been steadily rising, and I'm sure more will be more bought because he won the title. The overall focus has now shifted from Cena/Orton/Nexus/Barrett to the Miz! This indicates that the Miz has the potential to become a company draw! That's perfect for the him and the WWE. Michael Cole can definitely contribute to the success of Miz's title reign!

 Cons

1. This isn't unpredictability for the WWE, it's just randomness.

For me, this is only a testament to the bad quality of writing in the WWE. A lot of the fans were able to make make sensible, agreeable predictions for matches, events, etc. The WWE didn't like that, so why not come up with this? It's obvious that Barrett and the Miz will end up feuding until TLC, with Nexus interfering.

Orton may end up feuding with Miz, with Nexus having some involvement, but the first one seems more likely. I'm not intuitive or anything, I sort of made this connection. But, randomness has a notable, dire cousin, and his name is "desperation." The timing for this was a little off, in my opinion. It seemed as if with Cena gone, the WWE had to make a move. They rushed his title, and now they're going to have a harder time trying to figure out what to do with him.

2. His title reign may not become what most would think.

When he had the U.S. title, he barely defended it. His title was more or less a prop rather than a Championship. With each passing episode of RAW, I began to care less and less about it. That's how boring his title run was: It got to the point where I ignored that leathery thingy with the shiny plate on it. It made me a little mad to see him doing little to nothing with it, so you could imagine how I felt when Daniel Bryan won the title.

We've seen his previous reign with the United States title, and it didn't exactly pan out too well with him being all over the place. His tenure is continuing to grow, which is a staple concept in order to become a good champion, but, at the same time, the ambivalence surrounding his build-up is a little rough to take in.

One moment, he's losing matches, then he wins them, then he teams up with Big Show, then he loses matches again, then he's on NXT twice, he's back on RAW, he messes with Sheamus, then Orton. And some of those previous events didn't exactly help him out, like him teaming up with Big Show.

Who's to say that the same thing won't happen for the WWE Championship? Some people may take this as a bad comparison, but his title reign may end up being way too similar to Swagger's World Heavyweight Championship reign: He gets the title, then he main-events for a little bit then he loses the title at a PPV and BOOM! Back to mid-carder.

Swagger's WHC reign did little to nothing to help build him up as a wrestler. I acknowledge that the Miz has been around longer than Swagger, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's primed for the title or that his reign may be good.

In order for him to have a credible run, he's has to actually wrestle.  The only problem is, when compared to his mic skills, his in-ring skills aren't exactly good.  And with the WWE constantly mishandling pushes like this, it's kind of hard to see him with a good reign.

Sure, he garners strong fan reactions, more so than other wrestlers on the roster, but what about in the ring? The WWE has a tendency to put the spotlight on those with reputable mic skills and charisma, so paying attention to his in-ring ability during his title run may not raise concern.

The Miz has gone from lesser-known contestant on Tough Enough to a prominent mid-carder on RAW. He's gotten wins from other mid-carders and main-eventers alike. So I guess it's safe to say that a foundation was built for him to carry a title such as the WWE Champion. I just pray that his reign is executed perfectly...
