Novak Djokovic Tramples Tomas Berdych in ATP World Tour Finals

Lauren LynchNov 22, 2010

Novak Djokovic swiftly defeated Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-3 in Monday’s Group A match at the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

The O2 Arena was the backdrop for an old fashioned Serbian handing-to, served up cleanly by the third-seeded Djokovic.  Adorned in red and black dragon gear and personifying the dark beast himself, Djokovic never faced a break point, making Berdych chase the ball around the court like a wandering Czech.

Tomas Berdych suffered from early on, landing less than half of his first serves and giving himself three double-faults.  But he was not his own worst enemy because Djokovic played him like a fine violin, melodically and methodically breaking him down point by point.

The couple represents the trend of promising players who have yet to win major slam titles.  Djokovic recently was the runner up in the U.S. Open and won the ATP titles in 2008, leading critics to believe that he will give Rafael Nadal a serious run for his money in the coming months.  Sixth-ranked Berdych too suffers from Nadal-envy, losing to him in the final of this year’s Wimbledon tournament and not yet winning at ATP title.

The winner of tonight’s tournament (starting at 3 p.m. EST) between Andy Roddick and top-ranked Rafael Nadal will play Djokovic later this week.  Tomorrow, Andy Murray and Roger Federer face off in what promises to be an exciting match (especially for native UK-ers).  Stay tuned to Tennis Now for all of the latest news and scores from London.
