Michael Vick: 10 Reasons He Won't Win NFL MVP Even If He Deserves It
Michael Vick is having a monster season this year, and tonight he faces the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football. It will be the second prime-time game in as many weeks for Vick and the Eagles.
After his monster performance against the Washington Redskins last Monday, there's been a lot of MVP buzz around Vick in recent days.
However, there are things that may hold Vick back in the end, and here are 10 reasons why Vick may not be the MVP come the end of the season—even if he deserves it.
No. 10: Past History
1 of 10
Like it or not, Michael Vick will always be linked with his dog fighting case and jail time.
And with that, there will always be people that will refuse to support him. While Vick's criminal history won't be the determining factor, it will go through people's minds when they cast their votes, especially those voters who are animal lovers.
It's not fair, but that's the way it is.
No. 9: Possible Backlash
2 of 10
If Michael Vick is the MVP of the league, you better believe that groups like PETA will be out there protesting that a person like Vick won the award.
No one wants to to be labeled as a person who supports a man who fought, tortured and executed dogs, and that's exactly what some of these animal-rights groups will do if Vick is MVP. A vote for Vick isn't support for that behavior, but that's how protesters may try and paint it.
Who wants to go through that?
No. 8: Kevin Kolb
3 of 10
Kevin Kolb played the Eagles' opening game against Green Bay before he left with a concussion. Then he took the job back when Vick left with his rib injury.
His stats aren't much different than Vick's, to be honest. Kolb has a better completion percentage, has the same amount of attempts and has completed one more pass. The big difference is that Vick has more deep passes, so he has higher yards-per-attempt and touchdowns.
Kolb also threw four picks, and Vick hasn't turned the ball over this year. But let's not act like Vick has played infinitely better than Kolb.
No. 7: Philadelphia's Past Success
4 of 10
Before Michael Vick took over the starting job in Philadelphia, it's not like there was no success with Andy Reid and the Eagles.
Donovan McNabb led the team to numerous NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl. The Eagles made the playoffs last year and have almost always been successful with McNabb and Reid together in Philadelphia.
At what point is it more about the coach than the quarterback?
No. 6: Numerous Other Candidates
5 of 10
There are plenty of candidates out there for MVP that might be more deserving than Michael Vick.
Two of them that come to mind are Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Those two have been getting wins with a lot of no-names to throw to. Manning has lost a lot of his targets, and Brady watched Randy Moss get shipped out.
The seasons those two have had amount to incredible performances.
No. 5: Philip Rivers' Season
6 of 10
Philip Rivers is in the middle of one of the best seasons a quarterback has had in the history of the game, and look at who he's doing it with.
Antonio Gates has been dinged up, Vincent Jackson has not played all year long and countless other wideouts have gone down around them. I'm not sure many people could name who Rivers is throwing to right now.
He's had an amazing season and kept the Chargers in a ton of games.
No. 4: Might Not Win the Division
7 of 10
Tonight is the big showdown between the Giants and the Eagles, and this game will go a long way towards deciding the eventual NFC East champion.
If the Eagles lose this game and go on to finish second in the division, it will hurt Michael Vick's case for MVP. If he has another big game, though, he could be on his way.
If not, I think we look elsewhere for our MVP.
No. 3: Lack of Good Defenses
8 of 10
Can you name me some of the great defenses that Michael Vick has beaten?
Don't worry, I'll wait.
Vick has put up numbers against teams like Jacksonville, Washington and Indianapolis—all teams that aren't exactly defensive juggernauts. He's doing what he's supposed to do against teams like that, but I want to see more.
We'll see what happens when Vick plays a tougher defense.
No. 2: Underwhelming Stats
9 of 10
While Michael Vick is the top-rated passer in the NFL, so was Vince Young just a few weeks ago.
Vick is 11th in the league in completion percentage, behind other MVP candidates like Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Vick has had an amazing year, but at times he can go into slumps during games.
Let's not act like he's the best quarterback in the league. Great season this year, but not the best.
No. 1: Missed Playing Time
10 of 10
When you miss the amount of playing time that Michael Vick did with his rib injury, there's just no way that you can be the MVP.
Kolb stepped in and played admirably for the Eagles, but missing that period of time while players like Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady were out there playing and leading their teams weakens Vick's case for the MVP award.
He's had a great year, but I'm not sure he has an MVP resume right now. Missing that time will hurt him when it's time to vote.
