Fantasy Football Week 11: Updates on Sidney Rice and More Impact Injuries

Thomas CopainNov 19, 2010

We've all been there before.

It's Sunday morning, you're sitting down in a faded (insert favorite team here) jersey or other type of clothing, you've got a cool drink in one hand, a bowl of chips in the other. The widescreen is up and running in the background, and you're leaning down in front of your computer.

You're waiting patiently to hear the injury report, waiting to see if a name comes up and the necessary yay or nay that accompanies it.

If it's yes, you sit back and wait to see how the day unfolds. If it's no, then you furiously click away, looking for a replacement before the rosters go on lockdown.

Such is the life of a fantasy football owner on Sundays.

With one Week 11 game already in the books and the others fast approaching, owners are waiting patiently to see whether or not they can breathe easy or scour the waiver wires to replace someone like Tampa's Mike Williams, whose status was in doubt after allegedly being arrested early Friday.

Well, fear not, because here's the lowdown on Williams' and nine of the other big injuries that could affect Week 11.

1. Mike Williams, WR, Tampa Bay

We'll start with the aforementioned Williams, who was allegedly arrested early Friday morning in Tampa for DUI.

ESPN's Adam Schefter had tweeted earlier that Williams would in fact play Sunday in San Francisco citing a team source, but then cited another team source that said Williams would not play.

Schefter cleared up the confusion Friday, stating via Twitter that Williams would in fact play and start for the Buccaneers this weekend against the 49ers.

Start or Sit?

Start. Williams is by far the team's best receiver and Josh Freeman's go-to target.

He is, however, facing a defense that is 10th against the run and 22nd against the pass. If the 49ers can limit the Bucs' ground game, it might make it tougher to go to Williams.

But the 49ers are 22nd against the pass for a reason.

2. Sidney Rice, WR, Minnesota

The speculation about Rice's future for the rest of the season ended when the receiver told ESPN's Ed Werder that he would be activated and will play this week against Green Bay.

Rice, one of Brett Favre's favorite targets last year, hasn't played at all this season after having hip surgery. He had been hopeful to return this week against the Packers, as Adam Schefter reported that the Vikings must activate Rice by Nov. 24, or else he is inactive for the rest of the season.

Vikings coach Brad Childress had said before the decision that if Rice didn't play this week, he likely would have missed the rest of the season.

Start or Sit?

Sit. Even with Rice saying he'll play, it's very unlikely he would be able to make a huge impact on the game.

It doesn't help that he'd be going against one of the better secondaries in the league in Green Bay.

3. Josh Cribbs, WR/KR/PR, Cleveland

Cribbs suffered a foot injury, dislocating three toes, during the Browns' loss to the Jets last week.

His status has been up in the air for this weekend's game at Jacksonville. The AP reported that coach Eric Mangini said Cribbs has not been ruled out for this weekend and wouldn't make a decision until Saturday.

MSNBC, though, is stating a report from the NFL Network's Jason La Canfora that the Browns "don't expect to have" Cribbs this week.

Start or Sit?

Sit. If Cribbs does play, he could have a big day receiving against a weak Jacksonville secondary.

If he doesn't play, expect Colt McCoy to rely heavily on his tight ends and receivers Mohamed Massaquoi and Chansi Stuckey. I'd keep an eye on Cribbs, but it's sounding like he's not going to play.

4. Clinton Portis, RB, Washington

Mike Shanahan announced Friday that Clinton Portis "will be ready to go" this week against Tennessee, according to the AP.

Portis had been out since October with a torn groin muscle.

Portis return also coincides with the loss of running back Ryan Torain, who Shanahan said would not play this weekend. Torain had been the back who received most of the carries in Portis' absence when he was healthy and was sharing time with Portis earlier in the season.

Start or Sit?

Sit. Even before he was hurt, Portis was struggling to find a rhythm in Mike Shanahan's offense and looked like he had lost a step or two.

He's playing against one of the tougher run defenses in Tennessee, which doesn't help. If you do play Portis, it's a good idea to also pick up Keiland Williams, if available.

He has been getting more playing time the last few weeks.

5. Joseph Addai, RB, Indianapolis

The Web site footballnewsnow.com reported that Addai was limited in practice on Thursday, but did practice.

Addai has missed the last three weeks with injury. A bevy of backs have filled in his absence, including Donald Brown, Javarris James and the also-injured Mike Hart.

There's no definitive word on whether or not Addai will play yet this weekend, though ESPN's Paul Kuharsky said Addai could be a game-time decision this weekend against New England.

Start or Sit?

Sit. Like with Cribbs, you'll have to watch right down to the wire to see if he plays or not.

According to reports, Addai had been circling this week as his target date to return, but it'll depend on how they decide to go with him. I'd be careful and sit him for now, but take a look at Brown, who would get most of the carries if Addai can't go.

James might be an option, too, as he has scored a touchdown in two straight weeks.

6. Cedric Benson, RB, Cincinnati

There are conflicting reports on Benson, who has a foot injury.

NBC Sports and Rotoworld both reported that Benson would be ready to go against Buffalo on Sunday. However, both those outlets are now reporting that even after Benson participated in a full practice Friday, he's listed as questionable.

Start or Sit

Start (if healthy). If he goes, he'll be facing the worst run defense in the NFL and has the potential to have a big day.

As with a lot of these players, you'll have to be vigilant until Sunday to confirm his status. But he should perform well if he plays.

7. Reggie Bush, RB, New Orleans

The dynamic Saints' all-purpose back was officially listed as questionable Friday after limited practice during the week. But he has come out and said that he thinks he can play this week against Seattle.

“I feel like I can play. That’s kind of where we’re at. We’ll test it out on Sunday and see how it goes and see what the coaches think," Bush said, according to wwltv.com.

Start or Sit

Start (if healthy).

New Orleans will already be without Pierre Thomas and tight end Jeremy Shockey, both of whom will not play this week, according to wwltv.com.

If Bush does play, expect him to take on a role in the offense. He may not get a lot of carries, but I would think Drew Brees would give him a couple of looks out of the backfield.

8. Vince Young, QB, Tennessee

Young has been bothered by the ankle injury he suffered at San Diego back in October, which caused Kerry Collins to take a couple of starts.

But with Collins injured, Young will step back into the starting role. The Sporting News reported and Washington Post Redskins reporter Jason Reid echoed that Young will be expected to start against Washington Sunday.

Young entered the game last week after Collins was injured and threw a touchdown and an interception.

Start or Sit

Start. He may not put up huge numbers against Washington if Chris Johnson has a big game, which he is expected to.

But Young, who is improving this season and has played well when healthy, should put up nice numbers against a weak defense. He's a better option than some of the other quarterbacks available.

9. Jonathan Stewart, RB, Carolina

On Friday, Carolina Panthers coach John Fox officially ruled Stewart out against Baltimore with a concussion.

Stewart missed practice on both Wednesday and Thursday, and Rotoworld.com is reporting there's no timetable for his return.

With Stewart, D'Angelo Williams and Tyrell Sutton all inactive this week, WEEI.com said expect Mike Goodson to start at running back on Sunday.

Start or Sit

Sit. Almost every major outlet that covers fantasy football is warning owners to stay away from the Panthers this week against Baltimore.

And I tend to agree with them.

10. Nnamdi Asomugha, CB, Oakland

The dynamic Raiders' cornerback was limited in practice Thursday, according to reports.

But Raiders coach Tom Cable said he might be able to play against the Steelers this week, along with tight end Zach Miller and defensive lineman John Henderson.

But Jerry McDonald, who covers the Raiders for the Bay Area News Group, tweeted Friday that Asomugha and Henderson were not sure things and would be game-time decisions.

Start or Sit

Start (if healthy).

Another case where owners of him (in leagues with individual defensive players) or owners of Oakland's D will have to be vigilant and watch whether or not he goes this week. If he does go, he obviously helps the Raiders D shut down Pittsburgh.

Anyone who owns Ben Roethlisberger or a Pittsburgh receiver will want to watch this as well, as him being out would be a big help to Pittsburgh's offense.
