Dallas Cowboys Done: Which Free Agents Should Jerry Jones Target in 2011?

Adam SpencerNov 17, 2010

The Dallas Cowboys showed some immediate improvement after Wade Phillips was fired. Interim head coach, Jason Garrett, seemed to have his team motivated and ready to play. If he can keep the Cowboys playing well, he'll probably earn the right to be the head coach in 2011.

But, despite the Cowboys' big win against the New York Giants last weekend, there are still a lot of holes on this roster, most notably in the secondary and along the offensive line.

Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones tends to sign players he can market the team around. Recently, he's been signing or trading for a lot of big name players like Roy Williams and Keith Brooking.

But this offseason, he'll need to focus on less glamorous positions if he wants the Cowboys to get back into the playoff picture in 2011.

Here are the top five free agents Jerry Jones should pursue in 2011.

5. Alan Faneca, G

Alan Faneca is one of the best guards who has ever played the game of football. In this picture, he shows he can still go one-on-one against anyone, even Albert Haynesworth.

The biggest question mark with Faneca is his age. But the 33 year old is showing he can still play, as the most recent of his nine Pro Bowl appearances came in 2009.

Jones would be wise to sign Faneca to a two-year deal this offseason to help shore-up his porous offensive line.

4. Manny Lawson, LB

LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 31: Manny Lawson #99 of San Francisco 49ers sacks Kyle Orton #8 of Denver Broncos during the NFL International Series match between Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers at Wembley Stadium on October 31, 2010 in London, England

Manny Lawson wants a new contract from the San Francisco 49ers, but his play on the field hasn't warranted any kind of extension yet.

However, Lawson appears to be a guy who just needs a change of scenery in order to start playing well again.

If the Cowboys were to sign Lawson this offseason, he could be a nice complement to DeMarcus Ware. Lawson can play outside linebacker or defensive end in a 3-4 scheme and could wreak havoc on teams that pay too much attention to Ware.

3. Antonio Cromartie, CB

Antonio Cromartie was basically run out of San Diego this offseason. That's when the New York Jets took a flier on the embattled, but talented cornerback.

They signed him to a one-year, $1 million contract, and Cromartie has been worth every penny of that.

He has two interceptions on the year and he's managed to shut down receivers like Randy Moss (twice) and Brandon Marshall with little to no help.

The Cowboys' biggest weakness is their secondary and signing Cromartie would go a long way to shoring-up the cornerback position.

2. Matt Light, T

Doug Free is not the answer at left tackle for the Dallas Cowboys. They need to bring in someone who can reliably protect Tony Romo's blind side, especially after he returns from his injured shoulder.

Matt Light has been protecting Tom Brady's blind side admirably for years. The 32-year-old still has some good years left in him, but the Patriots have been stingy with talking about an extension.

Jerry Jones should pounce on Light and sign him as soon as possible. Light can shore-up the left side of Dallas' offensive line for a few years.

1. Champ Bailey, CB

Champ Bailey is the best cornerback that will be on the 2011 free agent market. The Broncos are unwilling to sign Bailey for too many years into the future because they are in a rebuilding mode of sorts.

The Cowboys don't have that problem. They are a couple pieces away from being playoff threats.

Bailey would fit in perfectly alongside Terence Newman at corner. Mike Jenkins, the current other cornerback, is not ready to be a featured player. He takes plays off, commits too many penalties and doesn't play the game the way it needs to be played.

He could learn a lot from Champ Bailey.
