Kansas City Chiefs Get Dose of Reality In Blowout Loss to Denver Broncos

Bill RobbinsNov 14, 2010

The Kansas City Chiefs came into their Week 10 showdown at Invesco Field with thoughts of adding to their slim half-game lead in the AFC West. They also were looking to keep the Broncos in the division cellar and win their second straight game in Denver as well.

Unfortunately for KC, none of these things happened on this day.

The Chiefs got off to a horrid start and never really recovered against a fired-up Denver team that was just coming off of a bye week.

Kansas City's defense made Kyle Orton look like John Elway out there, as he was picking the Chiefs secondary part by slinging the ball all over the field.

Orton and the Denver offense scored on the opening drive of the game, and it took them just 2:58 to do it.

Sadly for the Chiefs, they were just getting started, as the Broncos would end up scoring touchdowns on each of their next three drives, and before KC could even blink, the score was 28-0.

After another Denver touchdown off a Matt Cassel fumble, the score was 35-0 and the route was on from there.

The Broncos went on to win the game 49-29, as Kansas City was able to get some points near the end of the game while Denver had installed their prevent defense.

This loss was tough to swallow for not only the Chiefs as an organization, but also Chiefs fans everywhere that witnessed this lopsided affair.

It was extremely painful for the Chiefs because it was starting to look like this team was going somewhere, and maybe they still are, but after watching Sunday's debacle, it seems as if the team just took a step or two back.

This was a huge game for the Chiefs, as they were coming off of a heartbreaking loss to the hated Oakland Raiders and many thought that they would be so angry with that loss that they would come into Denver and take care of business this weekend.

As we all know, this didn't occur, as Kansas City played one of their worst games in the Scott Pioli-Todd Haley era.

The sting from a loss like this will take some time to go away, but the Chiefs do not have time to dwell on it.

Was this just simply a matter of the Broncos being more ready and prepared for this game after coming off of a bye week or were the Chiefs just outmatched in this one?

Time will tell, as it will with many other questions surrounding this team as they enter into a dog-fight for the AFC West division title.

Hopefully the Chiefs will come out to play and be more ready against a shaky Arizona Cardinals team next week at Arrowhead so we don't have to witness what happened on a nightmarish Sunday afternoon in Denver.
