Week 10 Fantasy Football: Tom Brady, Jahvid Best and Other Busts To Avoid

Ethan NorofNov 12, 2010

While there have been a fair amount of surprise fantasy football contributors this season, there have been an equal amount of early round flops that have disappointed owners everywhere.

Although there may be a resounding hesitancy among most to bench early-round selections, it's now Week 10 in the season and owners must exhaust every option possible to try and secure the precious weekly victory.

Tom Brady, QB New England Patriots

While the Patriots have certainly proved capable of winning without Randy Moss, perhaps Tom Terrific misses his old pal more than he's letting on. Despite a very respectable 95.8 passer rating this season, Brady is no longer the automatic first-round pick that many viewed him to be.

Although his 14:4 TD:INT ratio looks good on paper, the long-haired QB is averaging less than two touchdowns per contest, which simply won't cut it for those who were expecting a season of more than 30 scores. Not only does that number seem unlikely to be reached, but his Week 10 date against the toughest defense in the league should prove to be his tallest task yet.

The talented QB has just two games of 20+ fantasy points this season (standard scoring) and it doesn't appear likely that he'll get his third this week, either.

Jahvid Best, RB Detroit Lions

After the rookie burst onto the scene with an impressive showing in the first two weeks of the season, he's been nearly invisible since. Averaging just around three yards per carry (YPC) since Week 5, Best's explosiveness has been bottled up quite effectively by opposing defenses.

While his continuous injury problems certainly didn't help his declining stock, Best simply doesn't appear to be the same player that he was in the early going. While the rookie should prove to be useful down the home stretch, a date against Buffalo with QB Shaun Hill under center won't do much to open up the running lanes.

Miles Austin, WR Dallas Cowboys

Outside of Tony Romo (prior to his injury) and WR Dez Bryant, there hasn't been a whole lot to like for fantasy football owners despite the plethora of talent on the roster. Leading the disappointment has been last season's breakout star WR Miles Austin, who has been anything but a prolific producer this year.

Now, with QB Jon Kitna at the helm for the remainder of the season, it doesn't really matter who the coach is for Big D. Austin has been held to 40 yards or less in three of his last four contests and against a very stingy Giants defense, he may have yet another tough Sunday ahead of him.

With just two touchdowns this season, he could be this season's version of WR Greg Jennings.

Brent Celek, TE Philadelphia Eagles

While both Celek and Vick have been adamant that the two are on the same page, it's clear that they are not. Since Vick has taken over as the starter in Philly, there has been absolutely no reason for Celek to be anywhere near a fantasy football lineup.

With just one double-digit performance to his name this season and consecutive goose eggs, owners that drafted Celek with an expectation of him repeating last year's numbers have been sorely disappointed. With Vick looking to run with the ball when his downfield options are covered, Celek's just another body on the offensive line until he can prove relevant again.
