NFL Power Rankings Week 10: Which 10 Teams Are Better Than Current Spot?
NFL Power Rankings Week 10 time, but I have a slightly different take.
I was taking a gander at my power rankings that I have for this week and noticed 10 teams that are out of place. Some NFL teams are behind where their talent and skill level should have them.
What I did here was compile a list of 10 NFL teams that would be higher on the rankings if they just decided to play a little tougher. Here we have the 10 most underachieving teams in the league.
10. Buffalo Bills (0-8)
1 of 10
Power Ranking: 32
The Bills really should have won a game by now.
If defense wins championships, a lack of one can keep you winless.
It is a sad sight to see the Bills play in 2010. They have an offense better than half the teams in the league, yet they can't seem to get over that hump.
I would venture to say they are at least better than the Panthers.
They have near wins against some great teams:
Patriots 38-30
Ravens 37-34 OT
Bears 22-19
The Bills are right on the cusp. They could be a .500 team if the ball went a different way in their games.
9. Washington Redskins (4-4)
2 of 10
Power Ranking: 18
The Redskins are better than 4-4.
They never thought that they would have to sit one of their best players in Albert Haynesworth and then also have to deal with Donovan McNabb's worst year as a pro.
Coming into the season, I had high hopes for this squad. I always thought the Redskins were a good team.
They just lacked a consistent producer at quarterback. But as I see Jason Campbell tear it up with the Raiders, I have to think that maybe the Redskins jersey is a curse upon whichever QB wears it.
With a mysterious loss to the Rams and two near misses against great teams in the Colts and Texans, this team could just as easily have seven wins.
What a difference a few field goals make.
8. Green Bay Packers (6-3)
3 of 10
Power Ranking: 12
With six wins, I could probably have this team posted a little higher on my rankings.
But as it were, they still have too many holes to be considered a top 10 team.
One thing I must say is they are working to improve on that.
Brandon Jackson is slowly emerging as a legitimate threat at running back. Their constant backfield shuffle of personnel was proving futile in the beginning of the season.
They also have shored up their offensive line a bit.
It is the same scenario as last year. Perhaps this line just needs a half season to remember how to block someone.
Either way, the Packers should get a win against the reeling Vikings. If they do, it will be because they have answered some of their more glaring question marks.
7. Indianapolis Colts (5-3)
4 of 10
Power Ranking: 8
The Colts should be in the top five, regardless of Sunday's loss to the Eagles.
They are a well-balanced team that is among the NFL's elite in every category.
For their soft ranking, I have to look to their real blemish: a loss to the Jaguars in Week 4. That stain shows that the NFL has great parity.
Every weekend, one team can best another despite having less talent. That Sunday, the Jaguars were able to run all over the field.
The Colts have figured things out since then, but it is one blemish that keeps them in the back of the top 10 for now.
6. New England Patriots (5-2)
5 of 10
Power Ranking: 9
The Patriots were previously my No. 1 team.
Their fall from grace is directly the result of their horrid loss to the Browns.
The Patriots were clearly the better team on paper. They just decided not to play football this Sunday.
They better shore up any lethargy now. They have their biggest test of the season this Sunday when they take on the Steelers.
5. Cincinnati Bengals (2-5)
6 of 10
Power Ranking: 25
The Bengals showed this past Monday that they can play some great football when they are inspired.
Having a national stage, the Bengals and their receivers had quite a day. They did it while playing one of the best defenses in the NFL.
But you get what you pay for. The Bengals have spent too much money on "me first" guys.
Those are just the type to only play when they feel like it. The Bengals are much better than a two-win team.
4. San Francisco 49ers (2-6)
7 of 10
Power Ranking: 27
Going into the season, the 49ers were going to win the NFC West easily.
They would dominate their divisional games and cruise to the playoffs. Well, it has been a more difficult season than that.
The 49ers look like they are slowly righting the ship.
But 49ers fans are well aware that they need to make a drastic improvement to get back what was once a promising season. I guess that's what happens when you start the season with five straight defeats.
3. San Diego Chargers (4-5)
8 of 10
Power Ranking: 20
In case you thought special teams and turnovers were not that important in a football game, I submit to you the 2010 San Diego Chargers.
This team is prolific on offense and defense. Their stats in those departments are among the best in football.
Yet, they are 4-5.
The typically slow starters seem to be doing just that again. This time, their slow start was the direct result of poor concentration.
They coughed up the ball too much and were unable to play any sort of special teams defense.
Their first four losses came from the special teams underachieving. This team should be at the top of their division and in the discussion of playoffs.
As it is now, they are fighting just to get back to .500.
2. Minnesota Vikings (3-5)
9 of 10
Power Ranking: 24
Now we are getting down to the real underachievers.
At the start of the season, pundits believed that the Minnesota Vikings were one piece from the Super Bowl. All they needed was Brett Favre to come back for one more year, and the Vikings would light up the league.
As it is with most of the teams on this list, the season just has not worked out that way.
Favre has been a bust for once in his career. Their experiment with Randy Moss backfired, and now their coach is on the hot seat weekly.
The ship is sinking. Please walk toward your nearest lifeboat.
1. Dallas Cowboys (1-7)
10 of 10
Power Ranking: 30
To me, the 2010 Dallas Cowboys will always be special.
They epitomize what it means to underachieve. In every way fathomable, they have let their fans down.
They are so bad that their owner was forced to fire their head coach after he had just promised he would not do so all season. I guess the stink they leave on the field leads to reevaluation of your belief system.
I am excited to see where the rest of the season takes this lovable crew of losers.
