NFL Week 9 Bleacher Report Awards: Steelers Win, Wade Phillips Honored
With NFL Week 9 in the books, the awards are about to be handed out, and we haven't forgotten about Wade Phillips.
The awards this week range from the truly honored to the truly dishonored. The Steelers may have gotten a win on the field last night, but their award isn't for on-field play.
As for the rest of the show, come on in and sit down, there's a seat in the front row just for you.
Best Player of the Week: Peyton Hillis
1 of 14
Had Peyton Hillis run for just 100 yards and one touchdown on the Patriots, that would've been noteworthy.
But Hillis ran for 184 yards and two touchdowns. The man now has run through the Patriots defense, the Ravens defense, the Saints defense and had a decent showing against the Pittsburgh defense despite a thigh bruise that week.
When Hillis runs a defender over a few times in the first half, they're not too keen about taking the same angle on him again by the third quarter.
Apologies to Denver Broncos fans, your team got fleeced in that deal.
The Little Engine That Could Award: The Buffalo Bills
2 of 14
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
The Where Have You BEEN? Award: San Diego Chargers
3 of 14
Wasn't this team supposed to finish 14-2, or something like that?
The season started in September, boys! Welcome to the party, it's about time you started winning games. Philip Rivers only throws about 500 yards and four touchdowns every single week and this team still is below .500.
Well, they're winning games now, so everyone can just calm down now. The Chargers are here.
Who ARE Those Guys? Award: The Cleveland Browns
4 of 14
So the Cleveland Browns beat the New Orleans Saints a few weeks ago, had a bye and completely destroyed Bill Belichick's New England Patriots.
I'm looking around for Ashton Kutcher, but I'm not seeing him.
This is nuts, and it's the reason they play the games. All of a sudden the Browns are a good team, and the Jets are up next. Eric Mangini's revenge tour has another stop.
Comeback Player Of the Week: Mark Sanchez
5 of 14
We rag on Mark Sanchez a lot because, well, he hasn't exactly lit it up this season.
But that's all in the past now as Sanchez had one of those games Jets fans were hoping he had in him by rallying the troops in the fourth quarter and hitting Santonio Holmes in overtime for the win.
Congratulations, Mark!
But don't get too comfortable, throw a few picks next week and we'll gladly dogpile on you.
Manning Of The Week Award: Eli Manning
6 of 14
Someday Peyton will win this award, but that day is not today.
Eli was in control of the 41-7 destruction of the Seattle Seahawks. Peyton played great, but threw that little interception at the end of the game.
It's tough, I know. But it's never easy being the big brother. People just expect more out of you.
How Do You Like Me Now? Award: Jason Campbell
7 of 14
Benched in the first week, Tom Cable now says he's going to ride the "hot hand," going forward.
Jason Campbell, the ball is yours.
Pod Person Award: Terrell Owens
8 of 14
Let me get this straight. The Bengals only have two victories, Carson Palmer is the quarterback, and Terrell Owens is on this team, so Owens definitely through Palmer under the bus for the team's record, Right?
"I think Carson played a great game under a lot of heat," said Owens. "He put the ball in there in tight situations. You look at the last four or five games we've played, it's been a play here or there that's made the difference."
What have you done with the real Terrell Owens?!?!?!?!?!???
Owens had 10 catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns, so that could explain why he was willing to be so nice.
But seriously, What have you done with the real Terrell Owens?!?!?!?!?????
They Are Who We Thought They Were Award: Miami Dolphins
9 of 14
At 3-4, can't win at home, no real identity, the Dolphins are who we thought they were coming out of training camp, an average team that had the possibility of overachieving and making the playoffs.
Not much time left to overachieve, but the enigma that is the 2010 Dolphins still could surprise everybody.
Sophomore Slump Award: LeGarrette Blount
10 of 14
After running all over a soft Cardinals defense last week and announcing himself to the NFL, LeGarrette Blount ran into a better defense and got stuffed at the goal line at the end of the game.
He's young and has time to learn, but man was that depressing after last week's romp.
Unless you're a Falcons fan, in which case that was AWESOME!!
Quietly Becoming A Force To Contend With Award: Green Bay Packers
11 of 14
The Packers had a rough start to the season, gave away a game to the Chicago Bears with 18 penalties for what seemed like 500 yards, and then the injury bug hit.
Over the last few weeks, the Packers are getting a little healthier, players are stepping up, and the Packers are doing exactly what they're supposed to be doing for a team with their kind of expectations.
They're not being flashy, they're not leading off Sportscenter with a "Wow!" moment, but they are winning.
Best Quarterback Drama Award: The Carolina Panthers
12 of 14
You'd think this award would go to Minnesota, Cleveland, Oakland, or better yet, Washington or Arizona.
Nope.
Let's examine the Panthers. They start Matt Moore, who then is benched for Jimmy Clausen. Clausen then is benched and Moore is re-inserted.
Moore gets a season-ending shoulder injury last Sunday and Clausen comes back in. He's then benched in the fourth quarter for Tony Pike.
Also, the Panthers drafted three quarterbacks this past spring, Clausen, Pike, and Armanti Edwards, who has been converted to wide receiver.
But Edwards was drafted before Pike, and now the Panthers have three rookie quarterbacks on their roster, one a Domer who polarizes football fans, one an underdog and Edwards.
This is going to be so much fun if you're not a Panthers fan.
The Brett Favre Memorial Award For Unnecessary Drama: The Pittsburgh Steelers
13 of 14
Seriously, guys, attention please: James Harrison, Troy Polamalu, and Mike Tomlin, please shut up about the helmet-to-helmet hit fines and get a life.
Stop acting like you're the only teams or players who got hit by the new enforcement policy. That's the key word there: ENFORCEMENT.
No rules have changed, N-O-N-E.
Commissioner Roger Goodell simply asked officials to start enforcing it better and increased the penalties for violating the rule.
You can sit there and suck on your bottles and cry about how unfair life is, but this is a battle you've already lost. Stop launching yourself at opponents with your helmet and tackle people with your arms. It's not difficult, and it's what the league wants
By all means, if you don't like this, please retire and end all the unnecessary drama because no one cares if you're $100,000 lighter in the wallet. We all have our own crosses to bear.
Hanging Around One Week Too Long Award: Wade Phillips
14 of 14
No one would've looked down on you if you had turned in your resignation a week or two ago, Wade. The writing was on the wall. You'd lost the team, the discipline isn't there, and it looked like the pressure to perform this season was getting to you.
It's a shame it ended the way it did, but no one is surprised.
Everyone has a time in their life when they've probably stayed too long somewhere, it happens. Keep your chin up!
