Austin Collie Injury: Watch the Latest Hit That Will Lead to More Controversy

Gabe ZaldivarNov 7, 2010

Austin Collie injured his head and now the NFL has more fuel for the fire. In the past few weeks the NFL has cracked down and even instituted fines for hits that have put players to the ground.

The same thing happened this week. Collie went for a pass in the most unsafe area on the field, up the middle. In the seconds that would follow, he would lose the ball and his consciousness. Now the NFL will have to sidestep another example of a crackdown that may be proving to be ineffective.

The Hit

1 of 2

Austin Collie was attempting to take a Manning pass and turn it up field. He is met almost immediately by Eagles safeties Kurt Coleman and Quintin Mikel. Mikel was flagged for hitting a defenseless receiver but it looks like he had a good clean hit on Collie.

In the replay you will see Mikel hit Collie in his chest with Mikel's shoulder. He spun around the Colts receiver who was then met by Coleman whose helmet dealt a blow to Collie's head.

It is more than likely that Mikel and Coleman will receive fines for their hits. But the question looms as to the effectiveness of such a fine.

NFL players are trained to take on the opponents full bore. Collie had two feet down on the ground and should have been considered a runner at the point of contact. Mikel hit him with a good hard hit. It is then arguable the Coleman's helmet hit was incidental. As Collie's body was being thrown from the initial hit, it is hard for Coleman to move his own head from colliding with Collie.

These are the types of plays that illustrate that no mater what is done in the form of rules and regulations. Players will get hurt.
