Philadelphia Flyers Daniel Carcillo: Why We Love To Hate Him

Donald WoodNov 9, 2010

Some athletes are hated in every city but the one they play in.

Dan Carcillo is one of those players.

Carcillo doesn't mind being the one to make a big hit or fight for his team, as a matter of fact he embraces it.  He is a yapper and has earned quite the reputation as one of the dirtiest players in the game.

I think he is just misunderstood.  A soul looking for a friend and if you don't want to be his friend, he'll punch you until you can't stand anymore.

The following slides are the top 5 reasons why we love to hate Dan Carcillo.

(People in Pittsburgh are writhing with anger right now!)

He Is Honest!

1 of 6

Dan Carcillo will take any advantage he can for his team.  He will also put his team in bad positions and play too wild and undisciplined.  Either way he is set on making an impact.

In the video, he may have slightly embellished the high stick but tell me the truth NHL fans, Sidney Crosby hasn't done that his whole career!

He made an effort to put his opposition down a man and give his team the advantage.  He is the kind of player that we love to have on our team and they hate to play against!

He Will Stand Up To The Toughest Opponents

This is my favorite Dan Carcillo moment.

Enjoy the video because it's the perfect storm.

The announcer says that Marian Gaborik doesn't take any stuff from anyone and Gaborik proves him right.  Dan Carcillo rushes the pile in front of the goaltender and pulls Gaborik of the pile.  Gaborik then acts like a tough guy and drops his gloves to be promptly pummeled by Carcillo.  The Rangers stood around in shock and did nothing.

Say what you will about the incident, but they didn’t do anything for a reason.

This is the definition of agitating.  He wins.

He Fights Fair

This was Dan Carcillo when he was at his wildest but it is an example of the pure anger you need from your fighter/agitator.

Washington Capitals Matt Bradley clearly charges Dan Carcillo high and he doesn't respond well, they both throw down the gloves, and it appears that Carcillo swings just a little early.

If anyone wants to judge him for his wreckless behavior, cue up some Dave Schultz footage and watch him do some of the dirtiest things in a scrum.

He goes out there every shift trying to finish his checks and make people think about him and that’s is what you want from him.

He Respects The Integrity Of The Game

The Winter Classic is supposed to be a showcase of the elements of hockey that are exciting to the masses.  Leave it to Dan Carcillo to put his favorite aspect of the game on display as well.

From the second he learned he was in the Winter Classic, I bet Dan Carcillo knew he was going to fight.  He had to.  There was no other way to go about it.

Carcillo and Shawn Thornton decided to fight at one of the oldest stadiums in baseball on National television.  Hockey’s time to shine was highlighted by a winter brawl and a great moment in Philadelphia history.

Leave it to a Flyer to make history with his fists, and your surprised?

Under The Mustache, There Is Talent

5 of 6

Nothing angers people more than jealousy.  As much as people will say Dan Carcillo doesn't have a place on the ice, just have them watch this video and tell me under that 'stache there isn't some serious talent.

He has to keep himself out of trouble to keep himself in the lineup every game but he has the potential to be a really solid player.  He has been paired with talent like Mike Richards and he has responded well.  With some good shifts with the top lines, he could become a must start every game.

The best part of the video is that he got Colton Orr to freak out, he backed down from the fight, and then scored the goal.  He then proceeds to run his mouth at Orr and cause more hard feelings.  You have to love his tenaciousness!
