Peyton Manning: Could Macho Manning Get His Fifth MVP, and Become Best QB Ever?

Terrance JacksonNov 1, 2010

Even with two of his receivers out with injury, his starting running back gone, and a suspect defense, Peyton Manning just brushes it off and dominates as the Colts beat the Houston Texans 30-17.

Manning threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns, and considering his favorite target Dallas Clark is in a t-shirt Manning didn't miss a beat. This game was more about how great Peyton Manning is than how good the Colts are. It's just mind boggling to understand how he is doing this. His offensive line hasn't been as good this season due to injuries, he has to deal with a carousel of changing receivers, and not to mention his lack of a running game.

Yet and still Manning is on pace for another ho-hum season of 32 touchdowns and 4,171 yards which would be prime MVP material. Peyton has also been hit around more than usual this season, he has been sacked six times this season when he was sacked only ten times last year.

If Manning were to win another MVP award it would be his 5th giving him the most all-time, and yet again opening the best quarterback ever discussion.

I want to make it clear where I stand...Peyton Manning is the best quarterback I have ever seen throw a football, and I wouldn't pick any other QB over him. Though I am only 19 and I have never seen Dan Marino, John Elway, or Joe Montana in their primes so I may not have the best vantage point on the subject so I will just list the stats, pros and cons of each.

                                                    John Elway

Stats - One 4,000 yard passing season, 1987 MVP, four seasons of 25 touchdowns, two Superbowl wins, and nine pro bowls. Which amounts to 51,475 yards and 300 touchdown passes.

Pros - One of the strongest arms in the history of the NFL, as clutch as they come at QB and many come back wins.

Cons - Elway has not thrown for 30 touchdowns in any season and has thrown at least 15 interceptions five times in his career.

                                                    Dan Marino

Stats - one 5,000 yard season, 1984 MVP, nine pro bowls, six 4,000 yard seasons, two 40 touchdown seasons, seven 25 touchdown seasons, which adds up to 61,361 yards, and 420 touchdowns.

Pros - Known for his deadly accuracy and his powerful arm, Marino is maybe the best thrower of the football in NFL history.

Cons - The one glaring hole in Marino's legacy is the lack of a Superbowl win, and he wasn't as mobile as most quarterbacks.

                                                    Joe Montana

Stats - eight 3,000 yard seasons, two MVPs, six 25 touchdown seasons, eight pro bowls, four Superbowl wins, and three Superbowl MVPs.

Pros - Montana was known for his impressive comeback wins, his play under pressure and almost flawless post season stats.

Cons - Montana never put up huge numbers in the regular season, and never had one 4,000 yard passing season in his career.

                                                    Peyton Manning

Stats - ten 4,000 yard seasons, ten pro bows, four MVPs, one Superbowl win, five 30 touchdown seasons, and twelve seasons of 25 touchdowns.

Pros - Manning is know as one of the smartest quarterbacks to ever play and reads defenses like a children's book.

Cons - Peyton has a Superbowl ring, but has not played great in the post season and is even said to have choked in some of those games.

I just listed the most common quarterbacks mentioned in the best ever discussion and I'm sure all you Favre and Brady fans are blowing up, but I just didn't list them all.

If Peyton wins this MVP he will be in a class of his own and maybe just maybe will be the best to ever be under center.
